New Hobie "Surf & Tour" board
« on: April 14, 2014, 04:19:49 AM »
Looks interesting... I like this direction...
but it looks just "ok for surf" ... more of a paddler.
Anyone using one? Do you have surf shots that show it's potential?

I prefer the discontinued PSH 12'6 design.... I wish there were more choices in coastal surf/tour that are really fun "surfers"

I have the 14' Ft Hobie Elite and love it , even in small waves and swells...

these shapes look even more stable and surfable than my Elite, might be a nice mix, all around board

the last thing I ned is another board in my quiver..
Hobie Raw 8'10"
Jimmy Lewis Kwad 8'7"
Naish Hover 95 liter 5'7"
F-One Rocket foil board 5'5" 90 liters
Fanatic Aero 1250, 1500, 1750 HA foils
CabrinhaMantis 3.5, 4m 5m. F-One Strike 7m CWC
Hobie 14' race board

The 12'4" reminds me of the Bic 12' ocean that was apparently discontinued.
Coreban Dart 14'
SIC Bullet 14 V2
Sunova Speeed 9'2"
Red Sport 12'6"

It reminds me of this ... http://www.rivierapaddlesurf.com/products/ron-house-coastal-cruiser-110-126-stand-up-paddle-board-cruising-touring-sup-surfing-downwind

This type of board is the 'gap wedge' stick. It would never get used in my quiver. Never say never, Right?

Perfect for the harbor cruisers that don't want a race board, but need something that will track a little straighter than an all-around'r.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

In every sport I have ever participated in, even riding horses ..someone always tries to make an 'all-things-to-all people'  product.  They are often sold, but rarely loved.  This particular board looks clunky to my untrained eye.

I just took the Venture 12'4 out for a 4 mile paddle last night... pretty fun actually!

Full disclosure: I work at California Canoe & Kayak in Oakland, CA and we recently became a Hobie SUP dealer.  That being said, I have nothing to hide on this forum & have never used it as a platform for self-interested promotion. At least, not yet!

We had an eventful paddle - I rode a few mini bumps downwind, transferred my friend's 40 lb. dog on board for a mile, surfed a boat wake, kept up with my friends on their 12'6 & 14' race boards, and battled some upwind & side chop on our way back...  the Venture handled it all very well.

It's not blazing fast, but it's SUPER stable and tracks as well as most 12'6 boards. It pushes upwind nicely too.  Maybe 'll post a full review after taking it out in more conditions, especially the surf.

IMO, the Venture is an example of a new & improved all-around design for people who want stability, mostly paddle flat water, and may occasionally take it into some small surf (be it ocean waves, DW waves, etc).  For that i'd feel much better recommending this board over a typical all-around shape.  The Starboard Freeride also comes to mind.
