Cutting off a glued paddle handle and re-using it.
« on: March 16, 2014, 07:50:28 PM »
While I was in paddle repair mode, I thought I'd cut down my old extended shaft racing paddle for surfing. I've done this same process a number of times, and it has always turned out fine for me. My original extension required an inner tube to join the extended handle piece to my regular length shaft. I decided to cut the shaft just below the extension piece, then peel the out tube off of the inner tube. I then shortened the main shaft and re-glued the extension handle lower. Here is the progression.....

What's the best way to loosen 5 min epoxy?  I have a spare carbon paddle that I acquired but it's long and the handle is slightly crooked.  I've used the method before where I boiled a large pot of water and then put the handle side in for about 5 minutes, took it out and put it between my feet and pulled up - was able to pull the handle off pretty easily.  Couldn't get it to work with this paddle.  I'd like to cut it down and I've got the room to cut it well below the ferrule of the handle but once it's cut, I need to remove the layer of shaft around the handle.  Suggestions?  Someone told me to hold it over a gas stove burner like a marshmallow.  Not sure if that kind of direct heat is the best idea.

Cut it off just past the end of the handle ferrule. I would tap up and down the shaft to tell where the tube meets the ferrule. Then use a hacksaw to cut just through the shaft material left on the handle ferrule. Cut on an angle to create a spiral cut line, then peel. It doesn't take much force to peel it. http://www.devcon.com/UserFiles/File/Epoxies(1).pdf

I did the same thing but had to use a grinder to grind off that outer layer of carbon? Took about 20 minutes to get the radius correct but it fit right in.

What Paddle brand is that? Is this the same technique to use with Quickblade paddles?

You could shave the bulk of it down with a razor blade, then try sanding it close to the base. Then use some Acetone to try to get the residue off. You could also sand it all the way to the epoxy handle surface, then use a fine sand paper to bring some shine back to the handle.
