Any great spots near Colorado Springs?
« on: March 13, 2014, 11:30:09 AM »
Howdy,

We just moved from Louisiana to Colorado Springs.  Looking for recs on spots in and near the area.   Also, looking for any places  that are awesome and worth a little travel. We have a couple of MCITs.

Looking for calm or class I type paddles.

Thanks

Bakes

Bakes,
I am not sure what is close by to you but you can take a drive down to Pueblo Res. and paddle some flat water there.  I live up in Denver and paddle a couple of lakes here and you can also paddle the South Platter Rive when the flows are high enough here in Denver.

Thanks.  If I'm gonna travel it had better be great.  There are a few places I know of...prospect lake and quail lake in downtown.  Those should be pretty decent.  I've seen them on rampart reservoir so that is an option as well.   I read about the Platte going into chatfield which looks decent.

I think I have flat/open water covered.  What I really want is a nice stretch of slow moving river with easy class I rapids and incredible scenery.  I hear the arkansas is great but I have not found specifics.

Anyways, I know there have to be a bunch of great river spots within a reasonable distance...just need to find them.

I have heard that the Colorado River near Glenwood Springs is a great place to paddle.  I have not been there but a friend of mine has and he said the river is Class I and II around there.  If that is true, I am not sure but he did say the scenery there is fantastic.

I used to own a business in Canyon City, about 45 minutes southwest of the Springs. The Arkansas river runs through there and there is plenty of whitewater, all the way down to Salida. It looks mostly mellow, the highway runs right alongside the river so I have seen it, even though I have never paddled or kayaked it myself. Talk to the guys at Badfish, they are from Salida.

It's a bit north of you but Fort Collins is a huge water recreation community. I think it would be what you are looking for but perhaps a bit crowded and a bit far but right up the lazy river angle.

I also live in Colorado Springs and Pueblo reservoir is great. It is a decent sized reservoir and you can get a ton of miles in there. It can be crowed on the weekends with boats but there is a large no wake zone so you don't always have to be on the lookout for boats. If you can go mid week it is really easy to cruise there. Prospect and quail are not bad for quick paddles but I really like to make a day of it. I have heard that there might be some SUP yoga coming to prospect this summer.

You can give me a call at Underwater Connection. I am the SUP and Kayak Instructor here and I can give you a short list of our favorite places around the Pikes Peak region.
