Going hi tech in my shape shack
« on: March 11, 2014, 03:08:00 PM »
well theres a reason i havnt done to many boards recently and thats because i have a little project on my hands. Ive been wanting to build a cnc for a while as its not just boards that i like to build so its hopefully going to be quite a versatile machine. I have designed it all myself, ive still got a long way to go but its starting to take shape and looking forward to getting it up and running!

Looks great!

Some of the components look like those used in the boardboxx design. (hiwin sleds, maytec rails?) I've been working through reverse engineering their open source design. Hopefully I'll be starting to gather parts by the end of summer.

What dimensions are you shooting for? Closed loop steppers?

I'm new to all this, but can't wait to see your machine come together. Keep us updated.

yes they are hiwin rails and carriages. havnt full decided on what stepper set up im going with yet as i have been waiting to see how it all came together and evolved along the way. That said im not to far away from sorting them out. the working area will be around 5500mm x 1000mm x 500mm or 18' x 3' x 12" ruffle

7 or 8 mounts into the build and today we had a break through! The first controlled movement of the machine!still a lot of wiring and setting up but one step closer! I have attached a small Poe quality clip here for anyone interested.

What is your X_Y_Z ?
What is your Rapid Traverse. Any differences for each axis?
What do you think Your Cutting Feed Rate Will Be?
What is your Spindle Speed. HP, Method of Power (Air, Electric)
What will your Cutter look like?
Are you cutting Top/Bottom or Side/Side?
Suction Cup Supports? How many for the Span?
Software?
What Man Machine Interface?
G Code?

to be honest i don't know most of the answers to those question yet as ive not done the calculations accurately the should be more than adequate and is a lot higher spec the most of the other machines on the market.  I will be cutting end to end and going to be using shape 3dx which does the  cad and cam. Im kipping it simple to start with and just cutting from blocks so will just use a clamping method and develop a vacuum method in the future. cutters im not decided on yet i will probably experiment with a few and possibly try making some myself.

Obviously, you are a very talented guy. It is very impressive looking.

It's fun to watch your progress.

I bet it was quite a rush to see the it moving!

ps.... do you have enough headroom ?!?  ;)

Yea was pretty excited to see it move for the first time and not destroy itself ! There is enough head room to do most things but could do with more, I'm hoping at some point to get a bigger workshop with a bit more room in it so I will be able to utilise the full travel I have designed it to have.

Pretty dam awesome. If you could convert the plans to lag bolts, outdoor decking and duct tape I might try to copy it.

Another little update the machine is now fully functioning and cutting foam, I'm still playing around with the program's but hoping to do some demo board cuts in the next week or so all being well. This pic was the first cut the machine took.

I've routed foam a number of times. I noticed using a round nose bit kind of melted the foam if I stopped moving. It doesn't happen with a mortising bit. Are you having any issues with that?
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.
