New Angulo 8'8" Surfa
« on: March 06, 2014, 04:02:13 PM »
Just picked up a new 2014 Angulo Surfa 8'10" today. Met Josh Angulo and his wife  off cape and drove away with a carbon slightly used expo board. 8'8" x  32" x 4" single wing round tail. Bottom contours are slight belly in the nose going to slight wide concave shifting to shallow v ending in deep v from just in front of the fins to the tail which has a very hard edge. Futures fins in thruster configuration - no quadraphonics on this bad boy! Volume is listed at 136 cv which seemed accurate based on my brief flat water maiden voyage today since surf has omomentarily left the building. Handle is the first one I've been able to use with my 7mm mittens. Nothing like taking your gloves off in the winter to carry your board because the handle is way too small.  Supthecreek took a pic, he might put it up.

Can't wait to surf it in some waves and will post my observations. RI a possibility this weekend  - oops jinx my bad. Wow my first ever pic posted from my tablet. Neo-luddite success!

Very cool board, congratulations.  Angulo doesn't get as much press as some of the larger manufacturers but their boards are fantastic.

I love the look and shape of these boards. I wonder if they'll ever show them on the Angulo website which they haven't updated since 2012?

I'll be getting the 9'4" as soon as they're available.

Bring it to Newport Saturday I'll be down there w a few of my boards and I think Peice of 8 might head down as well, it's looking good so far and might even hit mid to upper 40's with slight offshore breeze !

I'm with you about the web site. It's not just Angulo but many of the SUP companies just let their web sites sit and rot for a year or so.

You'd think in this new cyber world it would be worth it to hire a teenaged nerd to add updated pics and info.

Wardog gets it. Look at how many detailed photos of his boards you can see online.

Surfed it today in RI waist to chest bigger sets and the Angulo flat out rips! Saw many zoneboize pdlsfr, piece of eight, stoneaxe, outcast, and some prone folk who recognized me from olden times in the ESA. Then I drove to NH and surfed to dark. I broke a fin on my Hobie which motivated me to make the trip.

The new bottom contours and the single wing, combined with the width, but relative thinness (4") absolutely worked for me and all of  my wetstuff Jim balance training has paid off! Also the short length led to later take offs, but that wasn't an issue. I think Ed nailed it with this new design!

Definitely a fun day in Newport and super fun waves, Mr. Big was all smiles on his  new Angulo and it seemed to only take him a short time to get it dialed in !!

Hey 'Big

That looks like the one I was so fortunate to demo last fall at our you-know-where beach.  My first and only experience on a shorter and wider design.

I would have used it all morning if one of our senior tribe members told me not to be a hog!!  Time just slipped away as I was loving it.

Sweet new ride, and nice score for you.  Love everything from the bottom contours, to the all carbon, to the pad layout ...pretty much a winner in every respect.  May it provide you with years of enjoyment and gratz.

The new Angulo has worked well in reef and point situations in R I. The carbon doesn't like rocks, but neither do I. Saw a prone dude rip out his fin at a spot where I used to know where the bad ones were, but it was interesting. Old man using a paddle as a cane doing the mossy rock dance - don't ding the carbon fool!

It also has held in nicely on some smaller chest to head high hollow waves here on the cape. It is wider than my Lopez, and my Rawson, but the single bump round tail holds very well with the fins that I am using. Go short or go home! LOL!

Can't wait for the water to warm up as it is still 37 or so. I LOVE this board, you can even stand on that big nose if you like - it is the same length as my ESA three feet over your head longboard...😉 ;)

Changed the fins again. I tried the stock tri-fin setup, but they were too stiff so I busted out my Lopez GL1's with the center fin very forward in the box. Had to use old Pepsi can shims to snug it down in the box. BOOM! Had three of my best sessions on it last week here on the cape.

Surf from the tail and carve like a youngster. Loose enough to initiate turns with no slide, but no longer catches off the top like it did with the stock set. I think the single bump (wing) in combination with the round tail is why it seems to work as well as it has. Am pleasantly surprised that if does fine in our hollower waves even though the nose is wider than my Rawson.

Glad to hear it. I'm loving my Surfa 9'4"

Phil at CR let me borrow a smaller Laird center fin along with some bigger side bites and it seems better than the stock set up. Right now I have the center fin all the way back. I thought that would be the best place to start until I get get a little better at surfing from the tail.

We haven't had much surf lately to do any testing. Pretty flat the last few days.

News update. Am now on the AST version as my approval prototype had a minor issue and Josh gave me a new AST 8'8" Surfa. It actually works better in strong offshore than the carbon and is stronger. I prefer it - and the difference in weight is less than it would be with a longer board

PDLDSFR was the man yesterday at First in RI and the brand new 8'8" Angulo Surfa was gud and supah as Ed Angulo said in an email to me! Still not using the stock fins, that center fin is huge. Back to Molly Hatchet and small sides - seems to be mo bettah with the extra weight.

Has anyone else gone from carbon to AST and preferred it? I must admit that did come,as a total, but extremely welcome, surprise. 8)
