Fin Clip
« on: February 28, 2014, 03:47:27 PM »
I got sloppy pushing my board over a little wave after I'd fallen a couple of days ago. The wave caught the nose and shoved the board backwards into me. One of the thrusters hit me on the inside thigh. Fortunately I sanded those puppies, or it probably would have been a cut, and the bruise is pretty much dead center over the Femoral artery (according to a picture I just looked at on the web anyway). So watch those fins, and don't get sloppy.

This is what happens when you don't sand your fins and one lands a direct hit on your forehead.  I wish I had a great story behind it but it was a small, crappy day at Dogpatch and it was my 2nd session on a new Hobie simsup.  One fall, small tumble in the whitewater and I come up tasting blood.  Guess I may rethink a 6' leash.

Yep, no way to unsee that!

I got a set of Pro Techs which are flexy and have a 'soft' edge. I like them for thrusters but I switched back to a rigid 6" center fin as the Pro Tech's flexy 7" felt kind of weird to me and I like the smaller center fin.

I sanded that center fin to take some of the edge off but I'm sure it could still do plenty of damage under the wrong circumstances, like kayadogg found himself in. Even the Pro Tech's could hurt you I'm pretty sure.

yeah, I should point out that the fins I had in that day were just a standard plastic Futures quad set.  I had almost switched them out with a fiberglass set but I was anxious to get in the water and didn't want to spend the time.  I think it either would have been a deeper slice or longer if they weren't the plastic fins.

Kaya.... good to see that you were smiling while bleeding. Fins can be nasty buggers! Glad it missed the important bits.

Pono, the femoral artery was the first thought I had when I saw that picture.... after that poor guy last month.... holy crap.

I broke 5 fins off against my legs last March alone..... very lucky... just bruises... since then I have only pushed 1 fin through the box. I always sand my fins.... but mostly for leash cuts. A dull axe still sucks when it hits flesh.

It's kind of a backwards Ke Nalu logo. I can also see George Washington's face in the bruise.

That bruise has gotten huge. It's even more clearly a wave now, but I'm gonna spare DJ the photo.

This could be the official "Fin Clip" thread. I also go lazy and a York Beach Growler sent my board back at me and my dull thruster went right through my 4/3 Mutant

At Xmas I tried to backout over the top of a closeout, board rolled at the top and I sat down on the fins.  Had two bruises like Bills on my backside

Yikes Marta!

My little bruise has spread out a bit. Really looks like a wave now. Sorry DJ:

Today I was kicking my board over a very big closeout, and the wave hit me in the nuts. Not good. Felt like a vasectomy via water jet. Took me a while to get over that. Good sesh though. Damn we've had one hell pf a winter. Yesterday Covesurfer and I went to S-Turns and had an epic day. DOH at S-Turns with no wind is as rare as hens teeth.

Scars are great for getting dates, I can live with it. The whole thing was kinda funny I had taken a novice long boarder with me to York and the swell was just starting to get organized and the shore pound there can be pretty aggressive before it cleans up on a biggish swell. Well Just before we got in the water I said to my buddy AJ I am going to have to keep my eye on you and then I never make it out, 10 minutes later we are back on the beach with me going I think i may have cut my arm-IDIOT. I get squeamish looking at my own wounds, so I have AJ peel off my suit and I tell him I want zero commentary on my arm just  a simple assessment of whether I need to go to the hospital for stitches-well his expression said it all. York Hospital Emergency Room is pretty swanky if you ever need to swing by.
