Trouble with Fin Box repair/install
« on: February 25, 2014, 05:57:51 AM »
I have read a good bit on fin box repair but would like some more help.  I have done other types of SUP repairs but this is the most advanced type of repair I have tried.  My understanding is that now that I have removed the box and cleared out the damage, I need to fill the void with epoxy/qcell paste, cure, route out a slot that will accomodate a new box set into a divinycell frame, align, epoxy in, cure, then glass over, and route out the new slot.  Is that correct?  Or do I seat the new box and frame in the epoxy/qcell paste as it cures??  I'm having trouble finding a new SUP fin box also.  Futures sells a fin box install kit with router and was going to buy it but I can't find a Futures SUP specific fin box.  I see plenty of surfboard boxes but I don't think those are the right type.  Any help is vastly appreciated!

yes love Fiberglass supply.  just not sure those surfboard fins are what i need.  are those center fins the same as used for a single fin on a SUP?

I am a different nut that most, and always follow this easy repair method. I dont think the Q -cell would be the way I would go. Sounds like a nightmare to me.  If I had that repair that size, I would square the hole up and fill the space with Balsa wood ( I have used 1/2 slats glued together to get the desired thickness), glue that in with Gorilla glue, then after its dry, sand it down flush and then router your box in.. It would be a strong solution.  Then just glass over the whole thing, you could add pigment to hide the box.  I did this on another board and it was super strong and worked out super, and SOOOO EASY...

On the gash, I would get a 1" wide piece of foam.  Mark it over the gash, router out the area, glue the foam in, then sand flush, then glass over the whole thing.  Again, easy way for me... I hate filling and working with q-cell, unless its tiny areas...

Just chiming in with my 2 cents and trying to save you some time and headaches.. I hope it helps.

Thats a huge area to fill with epoxy/q-cell.  Rout it out and glue in a new piece of foam.

Don't fill it with epoxy and filler. It will get too hot and melt foam. Use method of squaring up and filling with foam blocks. Use balsa or high density foam around box

I use Balsa because I can get it in Mexico... I keep on forgetting that you guys have easy access to HD foam.  Wish I did.  HD foam is a better solution as Balsa will suck water if it gets wet.

I've done this several times and it works great!   Fill the void with pu (also called A/B foam)   2 lb density is pleanty strong, but if you do it In cold weather it will expand less and be closer to 3 lb density.   It won't melt eps, is easily sanded, and  if you put a cover over it while it's expanding, (anything hard and flat with a piece of wax or parchment paper as a release layer will work) voids will be eliminated.

If I was in your position, I would be contacting Probox Larry.  I'm sure he would talk you through every single step and/or option. I really want to add a front fin box, but I dont have the nerve to try it. Good for you, stepping up to the challenge of fixing your board yourself. How did it happen? Sorry if I missed it in the thread, I kinda skimmed it.

It is not my board.  I have a client who needs the repair done.  Their boards came off their vehicle while driving down the highway!  Luckily this is all that happened.  This will be my first such repair and they know this.  There is no one else within at least a four hour drive to do it as far as I know so I agreed to take it on.  Is an excellent learning experience for me.  I would love to get in touch with Larry.  Can I find him here or do you have contact info?  Thank you!!!

If you feel like taking the board on the road, and time isn't money to you, you can bring the board to Nashville. I'm doing repairs here and could guide you through the process. Getting the new box set in is quick and I keep a full shop of materials including a vac setup, extra glass, etc. Feel free to PM and I can offer advice along the way. Don't overthink... it's just foam and fiberglass. They make more every day.
