Badfish MVP for ocean surfing?
« on: February 18, 2014, 07:13:30 AM »
This is related to my question yesterday- the Surftech B1 looks like an ocean surfer that is tough enough to be used in rocky rivers- conversely, wondering whether this river board would be any good for ocean surfing: http://badfishsup.com/river-surfer/mtn-sup/  It's sorta hard to tell from the website, but it's very thick so higher volume than a typical board:

Probably. I haven't tried surfing an MVP. I can tell you for certain that a Badfish MCIT is a horrible surfboard. Well actually, it's great fun in the surf but it doesn't bottom turn for beans. You can, however, throw a party on it.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

yeah the MCIT is an inflatable with cylindrical inflated rails so I wouldn't think it'd be too good!  The MVP is hard shell.  They also make smaller river surfers but they really seem too short for ocean surfing (6'-8', and not in an expert-on-20 ft face kind of board)

I think its fun. I have surfed it in smaller surf at Cardiff when we were out meeting with the Boardworks crew several times. Not recommended for bigger surf. Its a high volume chunky board. I would not want to get hit by the the MVP in bigger surf or hit someone else.

The chines make it surf better than a board that wide without beveled rails. It makes it less grabby when you are going down the line, standing on the tail with all that volume in front of you. Super fun paddling through the surf, like running whitewater. It is very easy to catch waves on the board.

You do get funny looks when you paddle out on the MVP, but if you're surfing a SUP you're probably not that sensitive.  I have also had fun surfing the 8' River Surfer.

Concur. I don't recommend the MCIT for surfing unless your expectations are in line. Like in this photo where I had been drinking beer all afternoon in Nosara and the waves were small. The MCIT is the board of choice for surfing in those exact circumstances.
