8'10 Allwave Video Session
« on: January 27, 2014, 07:13:46 AM »
After all these years talking about my Allwaves... I finally have some video action... granted, it's all shot from my head mounted GoPro... but it does show a lot about the board.

It's very comfortable for me at 65 years old and 215 lbs + 25 lbs of extra 5 mil wetsuit and associated winter gear.

Easily paddles into waves...without switching paddle sides

Confident enough in it's toughness to stand and wait for the lip to smack me square in the GoPro... just to entertain my compadres in Zonerland ;D

Anyway... here's what I got

Surfing the 8'10 Allwave

i get cold just watching that. and i know how chilly those occasional dunks can be...instant face-ache. but that sure looked clean and fun! and hopefully far too cold for whitey.

Thanks for the comments :D

145 liters

JimK... it's there... are you still having a problem with the video? I'm a YouTube newbie :-[

PDLSFR... nope... stepping up to a new Fanatic Prowave.... on order with JimK
Went by your place today... surfed linterland this afternoon... it was worth the trip! 3-4' clean solo session for the first 2 hours... then some of linter's buddies joined me... great time!

Linter... got a few videos of Paul

Thruster...because it was overhead and I didn't want to have to come in and fight with adding a fin if I needed it. Cold hands make that stuff harder on the beach, so I went with the center all the way forward in case it got crunchier... which it didn't :-\

Whitey is gone... at least in my mind... I was able to enjoy a good float around in the water ;D

I'm really interested to hear about this. I know you love your 8'11" Hobie so I'm curious why you didn't get the next size up with more volume instead of going with the with the Prowave?

lunchbox, thanks... and...... good question.
I could give a short answer... but that wouldn't be as much fun.... so:

The Allwave got me on to a short board when I was a big guy and really gave me a platform to greatly improve my SUP surfing....The RAW showed me that I am ready the move to a thinner nose and more foiled rail.... my next big step.

The 8'11 RAW is just too much work to really enjoy in full winter gear. My sessions would lose the fun factor and be much shorter. The entire cold season, is the setup for our best waves of the year.

There were 2 different directions to go:
- stay short, and go lighter..... but that would mean staying wide to handle the added weight... not what I'm looking for.
- go longer... but it would have to be light... and strong.

The bigger RAW made me a bit nervous. They are so light, and the skin is so thin.... that I am always afraid I will snap it in our hard breaking waves. (the video is an anomaly....winter storm  "Hercules" created by a deep onshore channel and for the moment, our waves a soft and forgiving.... it's usually board breaking stuff)
I really can't afford to break boards....I simply was not willing to put ALL my eggs in one basket.

I have more faith in Fanatic products to take the beatings. I beat the crap out of my boards. I also surf RI breaks, that are filled with rocks... the whole shoreline is rock and there are big rocks in the surf zone that you surf around all day. I have ripped fin boxes out of other brands many times.... the Allwaves never show a mark, chip or scratch.... and... they work!

I wanted a board that gave me as much confidence in the harsh conditions... and would have stepped up performance and acceptable stability. After much cyber research, contemplation and demoing others boards... I decided to stick with Fanatic, and get a larger Prowave LTD (9'6 x 31.25 @ 153 ltr)... it has the float I need, and design I'm looking for.

The Prowave LTD is made of  Innegra Carbon PVC Sandwich... super light.
JimK says... "it's tougher than the Allwave HRS !!!!"
WINNER ;D

Bonus... it has 5 fin boxes... so I can also run it as a Quad.

Stoked....can't wait! :D :D :D :D

To JimK...
Yes.... and I have talked with myself about it. We decided that it's not a problem ;D

creek - good to hear you're stepping up to Prowave. I've recently stepped up to the 2013 Prowave LTD Innegra Carbon as well from a 2013 AW 8'10 but down in size to an 8'0. Your stories are one of the main reasons I went Allwave. Thank you so much for sharing. So here's my chance to give back with my thoughts on the Prowave LTD.

First off, the Prowave LTD is more fragile than the Allwave, no disrespect to JimK. In the few sessions I've had it there are already paddle dings and pressure marks on the front deck mainly from the paddle hitting the deck when I go down. My Allwave has paint scratches only. The bottom is also softer than the Allwave. There's already a ding and scratches on the Prowave while the Allwave is still pristine. Had to put some rail tape in case it's not watertight. Have you considered the Prowave HRS? I don't think it's much heavier.

Also, the 5 fin box setup is nice but know that the center fin slot is a Futures box not a US center fin box so your standard SUP 2+1 setups are not going to work. I've got the Jaime Mitchell thruster fins and the center fin won't work. The side fins work fine. I already lost the stock side fin on the Prowave so I swapped in the JM sides. IMO, Fanatic's stock fins are junk. I also lost a side fin on the Allwave within the first few sessions.

That said, as I'm getting the hang of the Prowave 8'0, I really feel the high performance aspects of the board. It is very quick and responsive. Way above my pay grade at this point but I'm loving the challenge of it. Hope this helps.
