Installing inserts or plugs..
« on: January 14, 2014, 12:37:29 PM »
I want to use a DAKINE footstrap as a 'Sam's Handle' on tail of a Naish 10'6.5 or a 9'2 Allwave.  I have a bunch of plug prospects left from a INOP idea of about 7-8yrs ago...

The single, round ones seem suitable but there is only about 1-1.5" of total thickness near the end of these boards just aft of the pads.. and the plugs are 1.25" themselves.  If I put the plugs on a grinder and take them down to like-.75".. would that give me enough hold?

The fin boxes are in a similar situation (must avoid!) but they would not get the same sort of shear loading ..unless I hit some rocks with a fin.   I have both Surfco 'EZ-Plugs' and a pair of NSI surface mounts but am not confident in surface adhesives.    Any thoughts appreciated.

This guy now has a carbon dot now with a nut in it so you can screw a handle into it and not have to drill into the board.. Once epoxyed on they are there to stay.

I'd use the NSI surface mounts. Having one pull off, just might save you an injury.

I have a tail handle on my strapless windsurf wave board. It's the only way to manage the sail and grab the tail when you don't have footstraps. Sure it pulled off once, but so what. I just re-glued it.

Dwight,  I never used the NSI pads because they use some odd thread size..  You're probably right about them coming off - it's not like a kiteboard where your feet are leveraging the strap most of the time.

DJ, These little guys are inexpensive but not as trick looking as DJ's CF pads, but I need a nut base to hold a foot strap properly.

But.. I have: FRP sheet .. S.S. T-nuts ..  two CF films .. I might have to cob some together.

Thanks guys.
