California Lights UP!
« on: December 16, 2013, 05:12:19 PM »
Kelly Slater and John John left something for the rest of us from the Pipeline Masters.

It is interesting how when it gets good there are always more people standing on shore than in the lineup.  Fortunately one of those people, Brett Lando, had a camera in hand.  I chased him down after the session and Brett was kind enough to share these photos of me and a couple of my friends.  More to come of the other guys when they are uploaded.

The sets were coming up to 8 waves at a time.  Corduroy texture from the light to strong offshore breeze.

Buoys maxed out 9 feet @ 16 seconds.  Not the biggest, nor the cleanest but it did make for one of the best sessions in a long, long while.

I bundled up with my rib protector and O'Neill Gooru float, grabbed my trusty Jeff Clark 10' windsurfer/SUP broken 4 times hybrid, my Kenalu Molokai 2" overhead favorite and hopped on my bicycle @ 8am a bit spooked as to whether the swell was going to keep building.

Love the stoke, and the pics...  Thank you!  I surfed Privates/Trees/Sharks and some the other day on a little A-frame near ____.  Not near the swell you had out there, though.  You make that look like fun!

You would have felt right at home in Maui over the last five days. That looks a lot like Kanaha, though the faces are holding up a little better. Maybe more like Lanes. That last picture looks a lot like the wave Boyum got at Lowers on Sunday as I was paddling in, defeated. 8 out of 9 of mine fell on my head.

Beasho those waves are outasight and I love the lack of crowd.  Thanks for the stoke.  Looks like more on the way this thursday and onwards.  Love the wave count.  Keep the pics coming.  I almost have my cam mount set up.

I have to acknowledge that the short boarders have it harder.  Their takeoffs looked scarier than anything I had to deal with.  Here is Longboard Mike who's only complaint was that he felt 'short' the whole session.

What makes this difficult is that you have to avoid a large, angry saltwater snapping turtle.

Wow!  I have only windsurfed Kanaha and never knew it could look like this.  Now I better understand your Kanaha thread.

Beasho, your waves in those pics are much bigger than anything Kanaha can hold.  When it gets even close to that size, lowers closes out.  This last pic you posted of the guy going right, as a far away shot,  really shows the prospective of its true size.  Our waves can still pound you fairly good but our turtles are nicer.

Anyway it's back up here this morning so I'm hitting it out there.

Truth be told those last 2 photos were further down the beach, same photographer but at a spot that starts with an "M" and end with "Avericks."
