How to post pics on the Zone
« on: December 05, 2013, 10:37:17 AM »
I know there was an earlier thread about this but i can't seem to find it so I figured it was worth doing since I see folks occasionally saying they can't figure how to post pics here.

Here's the skinny on the two I use the most...both pretty easy. There are limitations to both.

The 1st is simply using the Additional Options link you'll find at the bottom of each post field when you are posting or adding to a thread. This method allows for more than just pictures. The file types allowed are listed. The file does have to be on your drive, is limited to 1000 KB in size, and will appear in order at the bottom of your post. You can't embed pictures within your text by this method but it's quick and easy so long as the file fits the parameters. Most pictures taken with a digital camera these days will be too large however and you'll need to shrink them down (another subject but plenty of software out there to do it easily). This graphic shows the steps to using method.

Method #2

The other method is used for posting pics you might find on the web elsewhere. You'll find a series of annotated screen grabs below that outline this method but this is the resulting pic embedded from Morebeach.com.

Go to the site where the picture is and right click on the picture to access it's properties.
Highlight the image address (URL) and copy to your clipboard with ctrl-c.
Go back to your zone post and paste it into your text using ctrl-v.
highlight the image address and click the image frame icon in the BBC tags (this will add img tags around the address).
Hit post.

There are other methods too like photo sharing sites that can automate the process when you want to do a lot of pictures and of course this was done on a Windows PC so not everything will be the same for a Mac.

Also... I got this link from a prior thread. Attached photos have to be under 1 MB to post. If its too large just upload to this site. It will resize the photo to a size suitable to post:

I have never figured out how to add text/content between photos. I have tried adding a photo, preview, adding text, and everything else I could think of.
Can you tell me how to do that please?

Now if they just bring back the modify button.
I used to have about an hour to fix any typos.
Don't know why they took it away.

It does exist, just not for very long after you post.

The easiest way that I know of is to use a photo sharing website like Photobucket.  First load your photos there (gotta start your own photo page there, free, and easy), then you can take the direct photo code from there, of your chosen pic, and enter it wherever you want, as you are telling your story.
I like stories with pics the best, just like books, no pics, I don't want it.  I never really got out of an elementary school frame of mind................... and proud of it.

It takes a quiver to do that.

Photobucket is great....I have a loaded photobucket account. Like weasel said you can upload a ton of content very very easily and it makes sharing them even easier....each picture has a number of format options to choose from to optimize for different uses. One click and it optimizes the picture and copies it to your clipboard with img code brackets (the BBC code from above) so all you do is paste it into your text where you want it.

Someone brought to my attention that method #2 is hotlinking...something that some webmasters frown on and could lead to issues. I've never had a complaint but I also almost always have given credit to the source...or at least the source that copied the source......anyway...user beware.

Just went to my photobucket account, hadn't been there in awhile. Some changes to the look but the functionality is pretty much the same. It took me about 10 seconds to resize this image

Original

Resized

Only thing I don't care for is I don't see how you can rename the resized version a name you want...it just assigns a meaningless jumble of text and numbers.

The best way to use photobucket is to setup and account just for sharing pictures on the web. That's pretty much its purpose anyway. You can setup your upload settings to the size you want...800x600 or other common resolutions. That way you never need worry about resizing pictures you want to share online.

Figured I'd mess around a little in Photobucket since its been awhile. Changed my upload settings to 1024 x 768 for this one.....doing that allows uploads at full resolution.... ;D

LOL...actually had to delete that link...pic was displaying so large that it screwed up the whole thread. Went back and changed the settings to upload and display at 1024 x 768. This looks nice full size but 1024 will have to do... ;D. BTW...I was the only one out for about 4 hours on this wave.....fun day.

You can't embed pics directly between text if you are using the Additional Options method....it only appends the pics to the end of the post (they are actually attachments). That's where embedding from photobucket comes in the most handy.

One thing I miss that used to be possible on the zone was uploading pics and then linking those....if I remember correctly they would display perfectly sized in the post but if you clicked on the picture it gave you the fullsized version.

I think the modify button is available for 15 mins now.
