Use of your paddle on the wave and for 360's on the wave?
« on: December 03, 2013, 06:36:47 PM »
How do you plant your paddle when you want to do 360's on a wave .
It looks like the blade face has to be feathered or in neutral when you
plant it . Do you then rotate the paddle or use it as a pivot point to turn the
board around it.
Does this make any sense?
If you stick the paddle in full face perpendicular to the direction of the travel it
becomes a massive brake so that doesn't seem like the way to do it.

CTuna,

360's are a compromise between three things (At least as I see it)
1) Intial paddle plant (on your frontside)
2) Re-weighting on to your front foot
3) Timing

Looks like the basic rule is always keep the paddle on the inside of the direction
you are turning in. I am wondering how much you are leaning on it or how it should feel.
I start thinking of the pole plant in skiing but you have width to the paddle and you can either
feather it or engage the blade, but which way an how much?
I have been watching these to guys as examples.

It's crazy how easy this is with a sub 8' board and a single 140 center fin. It's crazy how impossible it becomes when you throw on the two thrusters. That balance point of planting enough to break the fins, leaning forward, then leaning backwards, then forwards again, is still something I am so far from mastering while all the fins are on. On a bigger, floatier board, with less fin area per volume, it is soooo much easier. You can see how the first guy breaks the fins almost by weighting the front over the lip and levering up the tail. Craziness. Good luck!
Don't forget to bring a towel!

I think the guys in the video are both using thruster setups.
I wonder if a quad setup would work better. There is a two standup guys
video on 360's where the recamend a thruster - center fin setup for this.

Just found this link.  Explains the 360 very well.  Now I need to go and do one:

Thanks beasho.....It's always good to see Joe Blair discuss standup... he's great guy with lots of stoke, that has done so much for this sport... especially for the older, bigger guys.

I'm not looking to do 360's, but I liked that he backed me up on my twin fin thoughts. When I said I got increased drive from larger, extended base fins set up as twins, people seemed driven to correct me:

"you're not getting drive from those fins... what you are feeling is drive from the rail"

Ok watching this last guy do a Helicopter I think I see something subtle going on .
When he gets up to the nose his rear foot is on the inside rail(wave side) with toes almost to
the edge. I am wondering if that helps get a tail release? The few times I have tried
this I can't seem to get a tail release even if I put heavy pressure on the front foot.but
I have both my feet centered along the center line .
I am more likely to have one of my feet slip , even with a pretty good coat of Monster Grip.
Please Comment.

Went down to a twin fins from a quad plus a stubby. Board spins super easy now
doesn't seem any harder to paddle in a straight line but a little more tippy.
I think I am on the right path with this.
The instruction on this fin setup are in the blair 2standup guy video I am finally following
instructions.
