My first Summer downwinder vid.
« on: December 02, 2013, 09:37:46 AM »
It's Monday.. the 2nd of December.. and it's the second day of Summer down under.

With only 10-20 knots it was just enough for a downwinder.. but it was still great fun..  ;D

I would have thought that your new LE would be best for lighter winds....lighter board, and skinnier....save the new new Glide for the big days.

BTW, nice to see so many ladies out on your downwind days....you've done a great job teaching, coaching and promoting the sport.

DJ, I have a Hero Black and would like to start taking videos.  What setting do you use on your downwind videos (Resolution, FPS, and View Angle)? Also, why do you prefer Vimeo over YouTube?

I would bet he says using vimeo is about the music.  Resolution is a quality versus load up time balance that you need to wrestle with.  I think DJ uses 720p which while still HD isn't so long to load up and better for a wider range of devices.  I think it's the best way to go as well for what we do here.

FPS is something I was trying to figure out since I now have a cam capable of 60 fps.  But youtube and vimeo only post 30 fps. for sharing.  Or there is the 24 fps which I think looks kinda cool as well.

If you have a gopro, you're pretty much set from what is considered wide to super wide.

One reason that Vimeo is better (in my book) is for viewing. You can start to download a video, and wait for the whole thing to load while you do something else. Youtube only goes part-way, then stops, and you have to be watching/playing for it to continue. With an HD video, and or a slow connection, this can lead to pauses, skips in the playback and such. Plus, youtube is full of ads and all sorts of rubbish.

It’s amazing what this little camera can do. Base on the spec sheet and what you’re telling me, I should go with 1080p at 30 fps and Vimeo? When you say “is about the music”, are we talking about copy rights?
Thanks

Yeah I think so.  They seem more relaxed.

Isn't Gopro 'narrow' just a crop of the wider?  But I've head they get rid of the gut wrenching distortion with the 3

Thanks Headmount.

I don't know about the  FOV (wide vs narrow), maybe someone else knows.

The other guys are right.. I just set my GoPro 2 on 720 and one touch start and stop.

Vimeo is much better than YouTube for the mentioned reasons.

YouTube runs music recognition software across all uploaded clips and if the software finds you have used a music track registered by one of the major music labels, it will mute your soundtrack.

They also incorporate some extremely dodgy practices whereby anyone can stake a copyright claim to your work and YouTube then punishes you by placing advertising on your work while you spend 8 weeks proving that you own the work. Once you prove that you are the legal owner of the work, they remove the advertising. They keep the ad revenue either way.

Screw 'em. Use Vimeo.

That's it, one touch start and stop is all you want to be doing out in the water.  DJ... just got my Nikon AW1 and am getting it down.  Think I'll be ready when we get some wind or surf, which we have neither of right now.
