shaping 16ft done!
« on: October 05, 2013, 06:08:11 AM »
Pretty much done. Need to add H80 divinycell to deck area and around fin boxes and leash.

Any tips on how far from tail to put in box?  I was thinking 60cm from tail.

My unlimited 18' has the fin box at 2', tail to center of box. My 14' is at 12" to the center of the box. Usually if the tail goes to a total pin, you move the box forward. My 18' is a total pin. My 14' has a square tail like your board. Back will track.... Nice Job. An extra layer of carbon on the deck will be cheaper than Divinycel$$, and work just fine. I like using Divinycell at my fin boxes and leash plugs. I have a little stack of Divinycell that I use sparingly.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Talldude, i was going to both extra  CF and D-cell. This is first time with 1lb eps for me so softness is scary.
I just ordered the 200g twill CF. Planning 200g cf, 155g eglass Top And bottom.

If 200g CF x 2 + 155g glass is sufficient without D-cell it woild be good to avoid work and cost of dropping it in.

Im not going to v-bag this one. Maybe next year.

Guess i'll have to test putting fin at 14-18 inch. Im wondering what the effect on board is.

Time to spackle the blank.

If this board is for mostly flat water, then go 12". Anything closer and some fins will hang beyond the tail. If this is an open ocean (not downwinding) board, then move it forward to maybe 18". What happens in the open ocean is the swell lifts the board as it overtakes you. If the swell is coming from behind you, diagonally, a forward fin will maintain contact and continue to track. A fin placed to far back will be out of the water, which will cause the board to twist. This is more prevalent with longer boards. Frequency and height of swell of your local ocean, and rocker, dictates how far forward the fin would need to go.

This definitely a dw board, but will use it in all kinds of conditions. I live on a big 30 x 15 km bay that us open to the kattegat, a region of the north sea. Id say its more like a great lakes scene, even tho ive never been to the great lakes. ::)
Google maps : ängelholm, Sweden.

We have short period steep wind swell. I have not been out in our most radical conditions of west or nw winds 30 knots. The swells are a good 1,5 to 2 m and breaking. I dont want to do it alone, and just starting to find a few guys interested in joining, each 40 km away in opposite directions. Otherwise been out in 20 knots alone, pretty tame stuff.

I'll put the fin 18" up.
I also have 2 proboxes from Larry and plan on putting them in and getting a set of twins from him. If I can get his attention.. ;)
Also have a box and ventral fin, but thinking its totally overkill.

Then I was looking at SIC vids of those guys steering all over the waves with the rudders. But id have to make my own. That would be a bit of work....
