Hmmm seems just a year ago there was threads here saying the atolls will be under water in a few years ??  Guess not !!  Oh Im sorry it is not global warming that is alarming it's "CLIMATE CHANGE"  that sinister bogey man called Change ??  is'n that what Obama ran on "change" ?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2415191/And-global-COOLING-Return-Arctic-ice-cap-grows-29-year.html

http://www.alaskadispatch.com/article/20130909/global-cooling-london-newspapers-having-row-over-climate-change-arctic

I'm not going to debate about if climate change is really happening or not, but going by a one year fluctuation isn't overly relevant, and the source you are using is questionable at best. There is always some level of bias on either side. Lots of data to sift through and more waiting in finding out about cyclical patterns, and how much influence we actually have on the climate.

"On Monday, the lead scientist at the NSIDC, based at the University of Colorado in Boulder, blasted the articles on Monday for "playing games" with world opinion.

"It was very irresponsible reporting on their part," said Ted Scambos, a glaciologist with the ice center. "They know what they're saying and how they are saying it, and to say what they said they had to cherry pick facts."

Scambos said the Arctic this summer was 2 to 3 degrees cooler than average, and the extent of sea ice in August was a "big increase" for a year-to-year jump. The sea ice was about the size of four Alaskas, at 2.35 million square miles, a 45 percent increase from the same time last year.

But that's about the same size of sea-ice coverage in August 2009, which turned out to be one of the lowest years on record, Scambos said.

It was nothing close to the years before 2002. In fact, the sea-ice extent in August remained nearly 400,000 square miles less than the average between 1981 and 2010, with an amount of ice the size of Colombia in South America missing.

After record low years, some scientists expected an improvement this year, Scambos said.

The newspapers engaged in a very "poor level of communication" about what's happening, Scambos said. "You'd have to have a very unusual perspective to describe things the way they did and it's clear they do have that different perspective," Scambos said.

Moreover, the Mail miscalculated the numbers, saying sea ice had grown by 60 percent year to year, Scambos said. In fact, it's been a 45 percent increase since 2012 -- still significant but quite different than what was reported, Scambos said.

One of the key points made in the film "An Inconvenient Truth" is that weather events are going to become much more volatile in the short term.   Ie, wider variations year-over-year.  I realize some ppl here probably view Mr. Gore as the anti-Christ,  but it is a thought-provoking film.. and the ideas are not his own but rather that of a consensus within 95% of the scientific community.

But --you do have to actually WATCH it first...   :)

Former vice president Gore is a two faced hypocrite with a carbon footprint that would make a BP oil exec blush, but that doesn't mean at least something he's said in the past is true.

Is a two-faced hypocrite the type of person that makes a 360 degree turn in their opinions?

Even though the 2013 Arctic ice cap minimums are larger than the 2012 minimums, that doesn't mean there's no global warming. Weather is a chaotic system, not a linear one. You have to look at the weather means across a longer span of time than just two years.

2012 was a record ice cap low. Records like that just don't happen year after year. It also should be said that this new growth of ice has been documented as being very “crumbly” and not nearly as robust as the type of ice that's typically found there.

It needs to be said that the Daily Mail is not an accurate source of information about climate and climate change. They're scientific reporting of this subject is spotty at best. Their recent articles have been repeatedly debunked by reliable scientific sources.

So climate change has been going for millions of years, based on ice core samples.
We are told because of green house gases, auto exhaust and coal plants. Really !
What about all the nuclear test done by many nations ?   So lets tax everyone and develope a slush fund for the UN to use as it sees fit.  Thats a good plan ! (NOT)

I wonder how they are going to control all of the volcano's that keep going off ?
I wonder how they are going to control sunspots, that they know greatly affects weather and its patterns ! And what about those pesky jet stream patterns ?

Seems they don't want to address those topics, hmm wonder why ?

Time to start thinking about what we are being told and apply some common sense.

Its your money they are taking !

Waterman60, the topics of volcanoes, sunspots, and jet streams have been addressed. Most of those have relatively minor effects on climate. Volcanoes can have a strong short-term effect, but unless the eruption is cataclysmic, it won't make a change for more than a couple of years.

You're right in that dealing with climate change will cost money in the short term. Fossil fuels are the cheapest and “densest” form of energy we have right now, and changing to a different source means disruption and less available fuel. The problem is that fossil fuels put a lot of CO2 in the atmosphere, hence the global warming problem. That will get very expensive too, in the long run.

How come no one is touching this story I posted from the LA TIMES !! Seems to back up this story of growing Ice fields. Funny when the ice field shrank the global warming extremists were ranting that we will be under water in a few years. Now that it grew back quite substantially they say it makes no difference. ???  WTF kind of logic is this ?

Now there is proof via 10 years of no warming of any significance and a HUge amount of ice growing in Antarctica and what is the argument .......  shoddy ice of poor quality (MAYBE IT was made in CHINA )  :)   UNBELIEVABLE !!!

surprised a left wing paper like this is even touching this story

http://www.latimes.com/science/la-sci-climate-change-uncertainty-20130923,0,791164.story

It's a climate puzzle that has vexed scientists for more than a decade and added fuel to the arguments of those who insist man-made global warming is a myth.

Since just before the start of the 21st century, the Earth's average global surface temperature has failed to rise despite soaring levels of heat-trapping greenhouse gases and years of dire warnings from environmental advocates.

Now, as scientists with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change gather in Sweden this week to approve portions of the IPCC's fifth assessment report, they are finding themselves pressured to explain this glaring discrepancy.
