Minimalist runners...
« on: September 08, 2013, 02:34:53 PM »
...anyone?

Been 4 or 5 years running in five fingers
Did 2 marathons in my five finger seeyas
With 2 coming up this fall
Just if we have any minimalist runners here
I also wear merrell vapor gloves too
Minimalist doesn't just mean five fingers of course
Anyway to keep it 'on topic-ish' for the forum
I also wear my five finger signas on my sup
These are actually the MOST minimalist model that vibram has
Not really a running shoe though I don't think they would hold up well in the long run as a road runner

I tried. My back and hips don't like it, even the "softer" barefoot approach. Used Merrell Trail Gloves.
Taller than most, shorter than others.

I would like to try it, but have heard conflicting reports over the last year. There is a mountain trail by my place where I recently moved that would be a good place to start training. It's very smooth and loamy. Any pointers? I'm not a hardcore runner by any stretch but I have done quite a few 10Ks over the last few years. I hear the common mistake is trying to cover too much distance like you would normally do in regular jogging shoes and not changing your running style.

I have a pair of five fingers that I got for free, but I like going barefoot on my SUP when the weather is warm. I will try out the five fingers this week on the water.

Of course i think the best (and most boring) advice
Is to start low and slow with mileage
Of course i ignored that and did a 16 miler first time out
Well...I paid for that :)
And then I did scale back and build after that
It's not for everyone but I think worth a try for everyone
If u get into five fingers
You become an ambassador for them every time u wear them in public
That takes some getting used to
Merrell makes some pretty good 'mono' toed shoes
That give pretty much the same minimalist ground feel if that's what you're after
I have also tried some total barefoot running
Done some 10 milers
Tough to get into it as I could never build up my callouses enough
Too much road 'grit' would get in my feet

I'm not a minimalist but I do run a ton....I do have a nagging IT Band issue. Really annoying!

the 'naggers' is what had me start investigating the minimalist stuff
not saying they are a cure all
but i honestly have had less - much less - nagging injury issues once i went minimalist
plus i kinda got addicted to the 'ground feel' aspect - couldnt see going back really
i even wear minimalist work shoes (vivobarefoot dharmas)

I haven't explored minimalist shoes but I do have wide flat feet so I would be curious if a company makes one that fit my ridiculous feet.

I run in New Balance, they have the option of a double E width that is quite roomy. I started and still use NB730's which have a 4mm drop i believe. Also wear minimus trails that I can't get enough both running and for everyday use.

Sort of.  Nike Free 3.0. Chi running changed my form for the better.

I also run by heart rate to confuse this thread even more.

Love it and get weird looks from people when they see my Five Fingers. Best thing about them is they don't allow you to become a lazy heel striking runner

I trail run in my Vibram Spyridon usually 1-2 x per week, 4-6 miles. Great cross training and really mitigated on / off running injuries. Been running this way for the last six years now and really rejuvenated my love of running, especially on trails.

Like hitting the trails as well
Spyridons are great
Thicker in the sole but for trails it's what you want imo
I use them also on grass hill repeats
The sole design has nice traction and let's you dig into the terrain

I have been running minimalist for the past 2 years. The trick is to start with short distance. A few people I know switched over and immediately went out to do a 5 mile tempo run. Bad idea. It does feel great at first until you wake up with severe Achilles pain.

I have been thinking of purchasing a pair of the Newtons to get the 0-2 mm drop but with a bit more cushion.  After all, unlike our ancestors my runs generally have some pavement and some trail on them.  Pavement is not meant for barefoot running unless you are blessed with Kenyan-like efficiency and perfect pronation/form.
