Naish Mana, GS or GT Construction?
« on: August 13, 2013, 03:06:58 PM »
I'm thinking about ordering a 2014 Naish Mana.  What's the difference between the GS (composite) and GT (wood) construction (in terms of weight, performance and durability) and is the GT worth the extra $500 :o

hmmm, no interest in my post..

Here's the 2014 Mana's if you haven't seen them: (Naish has them on their site but the info is password protected for some reason..)

https://surffx.com.au/products-page/2014-product/2014-naish-mana/

I'm planning on getting one of these or an allwave.. prob 9'1" or 9'5"..

Somebody out there's gotta have experience with the GT vs GS construction??

The Wood (GT) is stronger and lighter.
As far as durability, stronger wins...

I recommend save the money and get the GS.. Unless the exrta money is no problem for you.. Or you really like the look of the wood deck.. Or you are a board breaking type person (someone who surfs big beach break and someone who falls a lot) because the GT is a little stronger.. The GT boards often have better fins but they only make a noticable difference if you are a very good surfer.. The GT wood deck is glossy and very slippery and the GS has a slight matt finish and has a little bit more grip than the gloss.. If you have a bad back or are a small person and lifting the board on and off the roof of the car is a struggle then the GT might be the better choice because its a little lighter.

Yup - i was advised that cheaper one is stronger/more durable too....not sure how they would stack up against Fanatic for toughness.....but both tough enough for vast majority I expect.

Are you sure that the wood (GT) is lighter?  On the Naish website it lists the composite (GS) as lighter for all the sizes:

http://naishsurfing.com/Mana%208.10%20GS/

I've gotten conflicting reports from shops, some say GT lighter, some say GS.. regardless if it's that close I think I would save money and get the GS

Oops, my mistake, just looked at the website again more carefully.  The size I'm interested in, 9'5", the composite GT is lighter but the 10 foot version is the other way around..

Yes the GT boards are lighter but IMO only noticeable out of the water..

The wood GT boards resist breaking in half type damage better but I think the GS bords resist the small bumps and knocks better.

if you are planning to ever upgrade the wood will hold its value better...well I guess it depends on the market there..but here at least.

Hi, I just bought the 9'5" GT and took in home (from Boston to CA)  on United in a FCS day runner bag with not much padding and had no dings in wood.  I surfed the 10'0 GS and love the GT as a first board. Its a wave catching machine!
