Fell down the stairs holding...
« on: June 30, 2013, 02:26:05 PM »
my baby boy yesterday!

Slipped off top step and landed with my lower back on the 3rd step down.

Boy is fine, dad isn't.

Deep deep bruising. Been icing and sitting for 2 days.

Need to SUP!

I only became coordinated with having kids.  I was a gangly dweeb until the age of thirty.  Then something kicked in where I was suddenly holding a kid's head centimetres from concrete with no memory of my body moving from A to B to do so.  Sometimes you are not there and its like the angst scenes in super-hero movies when they think they have failed.  Parents are real life super heroes.

Parenting is like raising a kid on the top of a sky-scraper.  At first the walls are high and close-in.  Slowly the walls get shorter and further away because if they don't the kid will jump them.  Its up to you to control the walls.  So far so good.

Yeah...it's weird how I never thought through the scenario....but when it happened, my instinct was to pull the boy close to me.

Feeling your pain, Giant, with an injury sustained trying to act like one of my kids. Indicators are it's an ACL. Very bummed. Wasn't even done falling before I thought, "Crap, I won't be able to paddle in the morning!"  Looks like its gonna be a few more sessions than that.

Brutal! Yeah, I've missed 4 sessions so far. Ugh. Do you need surgery?

Don't know yet--but just about any lateral movement or torsion pretty much buckles it--not like we need that for SUP ;-).  Have to follow up with the ortho and that might be awhile with it being 4th of July and all.  Just got my new Ninja Fin in the mail yesterday and was pumped to take it out this AM.  Was really hoping to do BOP in Sept so I'm hoping I won't be sidelined too long.

Ha, I did the same thing, now I am in a cast till the end of July.  I hope I will be ready for Hurricane season here:)

Years of Winter surfing, Backcountry skiing and never hurt myself till I had a baby.

I will just have to spend the summer sipping on Keiths:)

Bulky, how is your recovery going?

I'm about 90% now and can surf with almost no pain.

Giant and Bulky, bummer news guys!

Reminds me of when my oldest was only a few months old.  I just got out of surgery where they had to plate my clavicle.  My left arm was in a sling and I was holding my newborn in my right arm going down the stairs.  Slipped and fell and my instincts kicked in and I tucked my baby close to me and landed smack hard on my back and back of my head.  I could hardly move but for some reason I was happy knowing that my instincts protected my baby.  It was a great moment for me knowing that even though I was in pain for a few weeks.

Get better guys!
