Blisters/Bubbles on Carbon Fanatic Falcon
« on: June 11, 2013, 03:04:15 AM »
Today I have noticed the rails, both sides of my carbon Fanatic Falcon 12'6" are covered in small blisters/bubbles, I have only had this board for three months, brand new, so I have had it for the entire autumn season so far, hasn't seen any high temperatures like we had in summer (Australia Sydney region), stored in my garage (concrete never hot), stored in a dry ION board bag, always left unzipped at the bottom so it can always breath. :(

What would cause this to happen? Is it a warranty issue?

I have tried my best to get some photos

I had the same problem with one of my boards. I was told the surface was contaminated when the paint or clear coat was sprayed. The good news is that it’s cosmetic and not delamination. Some of it looks like bubbles under the rail tape. If it is the paint, Fanatic should pay for the repair.

Thanks for the reply, also if you look close you will notice its nearly all on the part with the clear shiny coat and not on the flat matt surface.

Anyone else have any thoughts please.

Betcha Chilly nailed it.  I spray stuff occasionally and if there's a tick of moisture or oil in the air line to the gun .. you get that.  Cosmetic like Chilly said.

Looks like solvent pops to me.

You can have these if the coating was baked or if the undercoat was not flashed enough before clear. (I'm assuming it has a type of clear coat.)
Basically, it's trapped solvent in the paint that blisters the clear. It could also be solvent in the clear if they did not flash it long enough before it was baked. It can also happen if they over reduced the clear (like a Macco paint job)
...or if they were too quick with the second coat of clear, it will pop.

Either way, it looks like a paint defect from the pictures, and I hope it would be covered under warranty.

Both of my Surftech Dominators did that.  I returned the first one and just sanded the second one. Looks like hell but at least it's smooth.

Yes its mostly the section of the rail with the clear coat added, it makes sense that that (the clear coat) could be part of the problem IMO, thanks for the help so far, I will bring this to the attention of the shop I bought it from and see where that leads.

If they won't make it right, take sandpaper to the affected area.  Get rid of the blisters.

By any chance did you ever put the board in the bag while it was still wet?  I've seen blisters form with painted surfaces before, but not spontaneously - usually associated with heat and trapped water.
