Augmenting paddle length?
« on: May 24, 2013, 01:07:43 PM »
I have a chance to score a nice carbon one piece (Surftech)...it's cut to a length that is about 3-5 inches shorter than ideal. I recall reading about an aftermarket grip that I could add to gain adjustability and.or length? Any ideas?

I am 6'1" and the paddle is cut to 79.5"
My customary range with paddle is 82-84"
Many thanks in advance.

Best, David aka Canoe Sailor
I also stand up paddle my canoes!

I'm ignorant as to what handle/grip I might use to get that extra length.....Best, David

You may be thinking about the Ke Nalu's  Extension handle.  It is designed to be used with Ke Nalu paddles. Ke Nalu paddles components are Hot Glued together. So you can replace the handles, blades ...

Odds are unlikely their extended handle will Fit your paddle.( diameter deference) Even if it did fit, your paddle's handle is most likely epoxy glued in place, and you would have to cut your shaft even shorter to remove your handle.

That said, I do know that  the KeNalu handle fits AXE paddles.

Are you using it for surfing or distance paddling?  If surfing then check the threads out shortening your paddle; that one's not too short at all...

Buy it, try it. You're using the recommended lengths from Quickblade. In my experience my Qb paddle likes to sit deeper with the blade to bite well and not wobble. My Naish paddles tolerate a good 2-3 inches shorter shaft for similar use and blade size.
If it's such a good deal, you can sell it without much loss, or even cut it down more for surf performance.

'm paddling an 82" Werner bent shaft, and thinking of going a little shorter.  I'm 5'10".  I notice that to get that "concrete' feeling i dig my paddle in deep, and the T grip is just below my shoulder.  I wonder if shorter will keep me from getting the solid catch and purchase.

Pretty hard to shorten a double bend shaft paddle without affecting the angle of attack. I think Werner trims top and bottom to get the bend location right, and they use very strong glue.
