I was the lone SUP at my local peak the other day. It was 3 to 4 ft. and really fun. I was on my 8’10. I was getting a lot of waves, but being very aware of letting waves go when the good surfers were in position. One of the best longboarders on the Cape is a young girl (24ish?). We were always in the same general area trading waves and talking between sets. She absolutely rips… has great style and an incredibly powerful slashback.

She finally looked at me curiously and asked
“Do you like that as much as surfing?”

Slightly amused… I paused… then answered “It is surfing”

She: “ I have always heard that you were a good surfer… I was just wondering why you do that now”

Then she added… “But then, your board is smaller than my board… “

I have an acquaintance that believes that all motorcycles are black and have 45 degree V-Twin engines.  Anything else is something else.  People will believe what they want to believe, till they want to believe something different.  Maybe next time you could offer some time on it, and she will see it as also surfing, or not.  Either way, she does not sound like she has much of an attitude problem.

I don't have a problem with someone saying "it's not surfing", I don't call skiing on snow "snow skiing", I call it skiing. The other forms, like water skiing, require the modifier.

If all that stand up paddling were is surfing, then I wouldn't be nearly as interested in it. Surfers do one thing--they surf on prone boards. Stand up paddlers surf, downwind, race, tour, fish, exercise, do yoga, and probably have sex on their boards (I'm not certain about the last one, but given the nature of humanity, the only thing that surprises me is that there isn't a youtube video of it).

So yeah, it's not surfing. It's stand up paddle surfing. It's different, it's better.

Turns out she has a SUP for flat-water, but probably never occurred to her to make the jump to waves.

I sensed a turn of the wheel.
Who knows....I may see her out on a SUS one day

Often when I get a question like that, I'll ask if they want to try it and if I'm on a stable board I'll suggest we trade  boards. I've converted quite a few in my area.

Possibly, proners are trying to get a patent on the term "surfing"...maybe it's the only remaining sense of possession they got, associating the act of riding a wave on a board from a prone position with the word.

Same with mountain biking. I ride a rigid singlespeed. "Gearies" and "squishies" frown at my simple, steel framed bike: Do you ride "that" here?
I have a bell on my bars. When they hear it, "that" is about to pass them uphill...LOL !

Locally, we're called "gondoliers"...my gondola is out surfing when proners are watching from shore...isn't "that" fun?
