Stand-Up Fishing:  This is Dan Shoemaker who has been a friend since childhood. About two years ago I was preaching SUP to him at a reunion party in California, he went out the next day and bought a 12' Laird. He has been surfing it up, and getting into fishing off the coast of Cardiff and Mex. Here is some of the recent haul.

I was going to say he should watch out for sharks, but looks like he figured out what to do with them if they appear!

Btw, how does he keep his balance with a 4 foot shark fighting on the line?

Hey,

I am Mike's friend - the guy in the picture.  First, I would like to thank Mike for getting me into this awesome sport.
I just bought my third board and I usually get out in the water 3-4 days a week.

Regarding the balance question - I usually sit down after hooking up with a big fish and let them pull me around while they tire themselves out. The hardest part is actually getting back to the beach through the shore break with a big fish between your feet.

Cheers,

Dan

Shoe,

what kind of pole setup and bait do you use? Also do you do any trolling on the board?

Aloha

That's pretty sweet!  You gotta figure out a way to time it so a fish pulls you so you can catch a wave!

Nice fish!

I'm interested in what you've seen with trolling too. So far I've been skunked when trying it. I usually go upwind or current and drift back over where I want to fish or look for a frenzy and cast into it. I've caught lots of bluefish and some stripers but nothing really big yet.

Looks like you use pretty much the same setup I do. My crate is bungeed to the board though. You have leash plugs in there?

Nice system. I still think it's easier to do inserts or stick-on than the edge clamps. I'll do some pictures of my whole system real soon now. It includes a good breakaway camera mount and a place to store a pack when I'm not fishing. It would make a good camping rig though I've never used it for that. Just PVC pipe and fittings.

Calvin has a great website which sells all of the stuff that you need for SUF (boardfishers.com).  I prefer the stick~on plugs for attaching the basket over the edge clamps.  Other equipment that we have found useful for SUF are bait tubes and portable fish finders.  You can make a bait tube out of a 2 - 3 foot piece of PVC tube with caps that you drill holes in so the water can flow through while you paddle around - the bait stays in good shape for hours.  I have had good luck with the Humminbird PiranhaMax 215 Fish Finder which costs ~$100 bucks.
