Fanatic all wave 9.6 fins set up
« on: May 03, 2013, 01:11:59 PM »
hi there!!! as a newbie i need some advice on fins set up, dont know how much it changes the ride.

i think JimiK was who wrote about the Jamie Mitchel thruster fin that make the board more lively.
As i broke my center fin y order one of those..

Now until the JM fins arrives, i bougth a second hand JL 8,5´middle fin, and i have the two originals side fins.

Read some where that i must put the center fin way forward, and here comes my question:

Way forward means all the way until the end of the box?

Wich was the best place for you?

How does it work best for this board?

As generally i´m too exited when the swell arrives and with no much time to "try and fix", i will set up the fins, and go out, no coming back until i have to go out.

So although maybe its personal preference, i want to try it in a way people know its works...

Thank guys!!!

There are two rules of thumb for center fin placement:

1- Start with it in the center of the fin box. The shaper put it where it is so you can move the fin either forward or back and he should know what he's doing.

2- Put the fin so the front of the fin is just a bit behind the rear of the two side fins. Not sure what this is based on, but I've hear it a lot and seems to be a good place to start.

After you've ridden the board a bit, move it forward to make it looser and better for smaller waves or move it back to make it more positive and better for bigger waves. Only move the fin it 1/4" to 1/2" increments.

Nacho... you fixed the board... awesome!

I have only used the stock fins in my 9'6 Allwave. I have my center 5.8" fin pushed all the way forward (towards the front of the board)
I have had great luck with that set up in all conditions. Double overhead point surf as well as smaller hollow beachbreak. It holds great and is very loose.

The waves that you broke it on looked pretty juicy at size... you may need to move it back somewhat... like Tom said... start in the center if its bigger... otherwise... all the way towards the nose works really well.

Stay out of the impact zone ;)
