Replacing Wax With Traction Pad - How To Clean Off Wax?
« on: March 07, 2013, 09:27:57 AM »
I'm tired of getting boatloads of wax all over my paddle, leash, truck, roof, dog, ocean kelp, etc etc etc etc.

After scraping off the wax and scrubbing with that weird talcum bag thing, what do I have t do to ensure that all of the wax residue is completely gone forever?

I use odorless mineral spirits with a plastic scraper.  Then wipe it down with some windex and paper towels.  Gets it really clean with minimal effort.

Just make sure you dont have any crack/ leaks around the cleaning area, the mineral spirit will soften the eps foam.

Most of my surf sups are waxed but I recently put a pad on my old PSH 9'6AA to make it more user friendly for friends. 1st, scrape the wax with a wax comb. Then take off most of the residue with the Wax Pickle. Not Sure how it works but it does. Finally, use some kine of alcohol or spirits to make sure all the wax is completely gone and the deck is clean so the glue will stick.

Most of the major surfboard supply companies offer some kind of wax remover liquid but they may just be rubbing alcohol. This 3 step method worked well for me...

Hot water to get most of it off, then a rag with a tiny bit of mineral spirits, then a magic eraser for all the junk and dervis.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Do it the easyway
1) Plastic scraper
2) Gasoline on a rag
3) Soap water and rinse

Even easier would be to disregard step one and light the gas on fire.
Thus saving a step and elbow grease.

Wax scraper, pickle, and a fellow zoner turned me on to Chief Firewater wax remover.  Works great.
