Quiksilver cuts athletes, employees and brands

Seems pretty drastic.  Basically it's down to Slater, Healey, Reynolds and Tony Hawk.  And no women's division anymore?

So no more Naish, Mcantyre, ect.  Wow!!!  Was Dave K still with them, or did he bail a while ago?  No more Carroll either.

As has been said, surfing is passion, not fashion.

Kind of hard for Jack O'Neill to go undercover! :)

The founders of Quicksilver are pretty interesting people. Good business heads and pretty upstanding sorts. I wish them well, that's a tough thing to see happen to a company they've done so much with.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Ditto on what Pono said. Quicksilver is a company that supports our sport. Most of the big surf companies pretend like we do not exist. I 100% wish them success!

Hopefully no one is celebrating this circumstance.  Layoffs are horrible... I have been on the receiving end... and the laying off end... and both places SUCK!

Quik has not made a profit since 2008, however.  That is half a decade to you and me.  The size of the company and the margin on the product just could not support such a massive team of riders.  I predict that other brands under pressure will follow.  An energy drink brand just axed all of its "athletes."

This bubble that has allowed a privileged existence for a large number of athletes is likely coming to an end.  By "privileged existence" I mean getting paid to surf, ride, jump, whatever... not necessarily getting paid a lot.  The days of the 21st ranked surfer not having to work for a living may be over...

OR the model will simply change (as it is currently doing) for the WCT with the tour being owned by someone other than the brands... someone who can do a better job leveraging the sport to mainstream world.  Will it work?  Interesting times.

Interesting economics... but quite frankly, other than the human toll, I don't really care.
