2012 JP SUP Race 14" x 28" Any experiences with this board?
« on: February 25, 2013, 05:05:44 AM »
Hi guys,
I found good deal for 2012 JP SUP Race 14" x 28".
Does anybody have experience riding this board? I would use it primary for touring in Adriatic sea + lakes, and maybe 2 races in summer.

Keep SUPping,

MArko

Marko,

that board was their first outing in SUP racing designs and with little input from team riders it was a nice board for open ocean downwinding a bit slow in flatwater. Construction is decent (chips a little more than I liked) It is probably the most stable 28" wide board I've ever riden

If you have specfic questions feel free to PM me

That JP Australia is the 2012, it does paddle well. The 2013 JP Australia Race is a huge improvement over the previous year and one of the fastest boards I have paddled in flatwater. JP Australia also just came out with the Sportster which is a user friendly race board that is excellent in all conditions. JP Australia has stepped up their game and is taking the input from riders and putting it into their new race boards.
I do Rep. and am a rider for JP Australia/ NP Paddles.

Hey JimK, how does the 2013 JP Race boards go comparing to the other brands like Fanatic, Starboard, Naish & Co.??

I rode for Starboard before I came over to JP Australia, The 2013 JP Race is much faster then the 14' Ace Pro and more stable. I have not paddle a Fanatic so I can not compare it to one. JP, Starboard, Fanatic are all made in the Cobra factory so construction is similar. My 14' Brushed Carbon JP weighs 25lbs w/o the fin. JP has kept there outlines the same as the 2012, but have been tweaking the bottom curves and entry. They have lowered the volume and paired it with a good all around fin made of g-10 and nice swept angle. The board tracks really well and bouy turns on a dime, this is something I struggled with on my Starboards (partially user error). The board excels in flat to small chop and for the 2014 prototypes they have added some dome to help shed water away from the standing area. If it gets rough out, I switch to the Sportster which is not as fast but handles mixed cond. better and surfs well. Hope this helps, I will take some photo's of the 2 boards and try to load them tonight.

Thanks a lot for the info.

So, you have the Race for flat water and the sportster for DW conditions, right?

Yes, I am using the Race for Flatwater to minor chop and  I am using the Sportster for DW and any race that goes through a bunch of different conditions. In Florida, alot of our races start in bay areas out inlets into open water and back. The conditions change alot and the Sportster handles the changing conditions the best for me. I weigh 190lbs FYI. JP has a true DW board in the works for 2014. I still have to take photos of the Sportster and the Race side by side. It is raining in FL today so I was unable to get the shots.

For me at 6'4" and 200lbs (95kg) I found it a bit tippy.

You can see my fiend Johno on it in this vid..

I paddled the JP 14x28 side by side with a Bark Dominator. The Bark was clearly faster in the light wind conditions but the JP felt a bit better when trying to catch bumps. Here's a blog post from our paddle with pic of the JP:
