Gortex Vent Plugs
« on: August 11, 2008, 06:58:47 AM »
I ordered a gortex vent plug from infinity.  Have not installed it yet because i'm worried over time it may leak and am now thinking of going with the much cheaper manual turn vent plugs.  Anyhone have any negative (or positive for the matter) experiences w/ the gortex plugs?

I've seen them, and somewhat impressed with the tech, but I worried about how they would stand up (no pun intended) to the UV rays or salt buildup, over time, as well as the "slight" risk of a puncture.  So I opted for the manual ones when I installed one on my Jimmy Lewis board, (come on Jimmy, what's up?, they're cheap!).  I keep it open when not using the board, and I'd have to be blind, or drunk, or blind drunk not to see it right in front of me when I start to use my board.  So making sure it's closed before going out is never a problem for me.
But good on you for getting a plug, any epoxy board that has an EPS core, needs a plug, it's the nature of the beast.  Older PU boards, don't really need them, that's why you almost never see them on PU surfboards or longboards.
It takes a quiver to do that.

The membrane in the vent is very small and not visible when installed. Remove it occasionally with a 16mm spark plug socket, to rinse membrane area with fresh water to prevent build up of salt crystals.

So far, so good. I like the idea that my board is venting all the time.

The seller also mentioned that the teflon memrane does not really build up salt and is difficult to puncture even when poked with a sharp screwdriver (and it is not exposed when on a board).

I remembered watching this a while ago, went looking and got lucky..  :) Here's the link.

Steve Boehne of Infinity talks about the vent (and his suggested use and maintenance) at the start of this video.

Hope it's a help.

I just read about this on the Infinity website this morning, while I was debating buying a Rad Noserider...

he mentions that all EPS/epoxy boards should have an air vent... anyone out there have an EPS PSH board with an air vent, or thinking about installing one?  any opinions on doing this?  Blane?  anyone...?  ???

I just installed one on my PSH custom 10'2".

Part of my reasoning is that i live in an area w/ pretty extreme temperature extremes.  (108 degrees today... yikes)  thankfully it does not normally get that hot.  I'll be driving to the coast today where the temperature will fall to perhaps the 50's if it is fogged in.

Anyhow, it was pretty straight forward from the directions infinity provides.  However i used regular epoxy instead of 5 min expoxy like they recommended.  after it cured i went aournd the edges of it w/ 5 minute epoxy just to make sure it was 100% sealed.  I also installed it where my board traction pad is.  i just cut out a circle from the pad.  I did this in part because the vent sticks up about 1/8th of an inch or more and the pad provides some protection for it since the pad is slightly higher.

Aloha Everyone,
I just made a new board and installed a "Gortex" vent plug. I must say that these plugs are very impressive & highly recommend it on all EPS boards. When your board goes from Cold to Hot....the board need to breath and will notice bubble escaping from theses plugs..........Very Impressive!  :o
