Anyone else bothered by the A.S.P.C.A. use of "Silent Night"?
« on: December 21, 2012, 01:42:45 PM »
I despise the ad.
I think their effort is ill advised.

Christmas season is a traditional time for charitable donations, and many organizations depend heavily on this "seasonal spirit" of giving. Most have respected the happiness and good cheer of this wonderful time of year, and been very careful to fit into the joy of the season. Making a donation to the needy, is an act of sharing the season of giving with them.

A.S.P.C.A. -
You are using a "not so subtle" form of mental anguish on humans to stop the abuse of animals.  ???
A.S.P.C.A. - I wish you would respect our need to preserve the "Wonder" of the Christmas Season, as well as the need to protect animals. We need love too.

I'm glad nobody is responding to this thread... I had just seen the ad 1 too many times.
I will set my sights higher from now on... there has been too much negativity on the zone lately.
My apologies for adding more.

I better hurry off now and cook dinner if I plan to eat before the end of the world ;D

No need to apologize.   ;D

I do think it's funny how people are going on about the end of the world like there's no tomorrow.

Water is cold. Surf is flat. People get bored. I've noticed it too. I appreciate the self-awareness, I'll post to that.

I hate all the ASPCA commercials, starving dogs, dirty dogs, barely alive dogs, all over very sad music.  No different than the feed the hungry commercials where you see  little dirty, skinny kids with flies crawling thru there eyes.
There is something about those type of commercials that just hits me the wrong way, call me a cynic or cold hearted, but that type of commercial has never worked on me.
Okay, I admit it.
It takes a quiver to do that.

The Humane Society here took the opposite approach.  Instead of focusing on the poor animals, their ad agency created a positive campaign to "End Petlessness".  It has been a great success.  Here's an article:

http://www.wweek.com/portland/article-18206-cute_counts.html

They said, “The whole point of it was, instead of showing sad animals with Sarah McLachlan playing in the background, to show the positives that animals to bring to humans.”

Much better ;D
And it doesn't destroy any further enjoyment of a beautiful, religious song.

I would guess this is some kind of animal thing? (ASPCA???)  Never heard that acronym before.

I believe it stands for: "American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals".

Haven't seen the commercial, but knowing those folks, "Silent Night" was probably used along with shots of Fido & Fluffy heading off to the Gas Chamber  ::).

Here is a link to the commercial.

It is depressing.  I enjoy not having the responsibility of a pet anymore, and not having kids in the house too!

Sarah makes me want to open a vein in her happiest songs.

Nonprofits do the worst advertising in the world, even the homebrew stuff on Maui radio is better thought out. I've tried to help a few, but it's pointless. Big boards full of well meaning people who all have strong opinions and no relevant experience. Hopeless. They copy each other to an astonishing degree, so it all sounds the same in short order. Every organization that has to do with kids has a logo with starfish people, one big and one little. Bizarre.

Every organization that thinks they need to plunk your heartstrings does it with a celebrity that is A. moronic. B. an obvious zealot, and C. an emotional train wreck. The idea that these folks could compel people to take action is astonishing. But all you have to do is sit through a couple of those board meetings trying to steer them in a useful direction to understand. First thing you hear is "I like the commercial the ASPCA did, you know, with Sarah McLaughlin. We need something like that". That's when I get up and leave.
