What board do you want to conquer next?
« on: December 13, 2012, 03:36:07 PM »
Okay kids. Spur of the moment topic.
I've been surfing since I was a fat little 10-year old brat. Over the years, board tastes have changed. It's always been, get a new board, figure out how to ride her, then move on to the next one (I swear I'm talking about surfboards).

I was never a great short boarder, so in the early 90's, Eggs were quite fun. A fat 7'6, a fast gun'esque 7'4", and then settled on a 6'10" Encinitas egg.
I even had a 9'2" skinny rocket-longboard.

So now I've transitioned to needing a paddle to ride a board. My neck thanks me, and so does my doctor. Too much prone paddling, and I can't move my neck for three days. I started on a 10'0" NSP, because...well...there was no guide book on where to start.  All was fine in the world of kelp bed paddling until one day at Boludo's spot, I forced myself to catch a few waves (if only there were video of that fall-a-palooza).  That was it, I was hooked, lined, and sinkered!

But...I never really longboarded. Sure I had one, but it was for gutless days. So the downsizing began. 8'5, 7'4", 6'6", and settled (for now) on an 8'0". And lately, the longboard style has caught my eye.  It's the bigger boards I've yet to pseudo-master. And by that I mean enough to where I'm satisfied with what I can do on a board.

I'm a lousy cross-stepper.  Watching girls do it is damn near a turn-on. It's not easy, yet it's done on a big, easy to ride board.  I think that's my next challenge in the Sup world.

What's yours?

:)

Cardiff... hate to keep agreeing with you, but I would rather watch Kassia Meador surf in a bikini than watch the Victoria's Secret models dance naked.

Finless / Minimal Fins..
On smaller more rolly days...

Been playing around with Bonzer side bites and nubsters,
side bites and no center, and Side bites and a center nubster.
May go 5 Nubsters, we'll see.

With a Short Paddle Board it helps to have some fin area in the water
to keep from totally yawing about, especially when digging for a wave.

Once on the wave I like to break em out..makes for alot of fun on less challenging days.

The Naish Hokua 7'8" has channels on the bottom so I am trying a few things with
this one I have not been able to pull off with other boards..

Fishy Fishy Fishy.....

Yeah the whole smooth thing is something I have yet to conquer. There's a guy I surf with at times named Chuck (Big Ed knows him) who is just butter in the water. I am more whipped cream. I'd like to add some butter. Even when I ride logs,  no butter. That and maybe throw a 360 in the mix. I've always sucked at those.

Great thread CS!  I wanted a 9 foot longboard style sup as well, until I got the little simmons inspired board and it's comfortable like a longboard.  I'd love to work on cross stepping and smoothing out the way I ride.

Kneecap, yes I call Chuck "Smooth Operator" and I usually sing the song in my head when I see him.

Ralph, I also agree with you on the finless thing.  That could be challenging yet fun.  I'd like to run some super small fins on my new 7'3" and see what happens.

This thread will just keep my wheels spinning.

I'm focusing on my 9' semi-longboard style Fusion for now but I'm also shopping craigslist for a cheap "real" longboard. I share the neck pain but I need to be able to hang prone surfing to feel like I'm earning my place in the lineup.

Strangely, on a SUP I can walk the board pretty well. It helps to not weigh a lot but I also practice cross stepping on a board in my backyard too.

I have that 8'0" SUP still mocking me in the garage as well. I'll report back on the progress there.

Ponto Chuck sure is economy in motion, no extra movements or wasted energy. He is like a teacher tape for SUS. He walks his short King's.

A side note you want to see an improved surfer check out Boludo this guy is impressive on his new quiver!

For me- get fitter to ride a smaller board and carve a few more turns. Teach the tree more balance..Keep having fun!

My JC 9 10 semi gun. I am working to get in better shape after my shoulder surgery. I am stuck in the 12 foot faces or so range after that my fitness level and shoulder strength is just not their to feel comfortable.

two boards-boludo has stoked me to to try a simmons

big long fat noserider soft railed easygoin sup to practice sidesteps and other more graceful moves upon-i think Global Whining is leading to horrendous surf conditions at least in Socal-epic bad run of surf lately-so im gonna need a log to just cruise around on the 1-2 foot days.

Ironically, it's Original Poster Cardiff Sweeper's current go-to board--8'0" Starboard Pro--that I'd like to give a go (or something similar). I want to see how far I can go down in volume and still have a practical ride for Right Coast Mush. Of course, Boludo is throwing a spanner into the works by going on about his Simmons-inspired board and its small-wave performance. All you guys could end up costing me $$$.

I recently picked up a relatively thin, relatively low-volume performance longboard SUP for much the same reasons already mentioned.  It's a ton of fun even if I never was a prone longboarder back in the day.

I switch a bit with my wife and her 11-1 in the surf.  I'd like to get comfortable with cross stepping and hers is built for such activity.  She's progressed now to the point where we're looking to drop down to the 9'6 range. How lucky can one guy get?  A wife that requests the very board I'm hoping to acquire? Merry Christmas to me.
