Surprise Set
« on: October 28, 2012, 01:50:41 PM »
Woke up to check the waves yesterday and it was really small.  Grabbed my cousins 11ft Aquaglide.  Figured I'd go for a paddle, not expecting much.    I caught a bunch of little knee to waist high waves while paddling up the coast.  After about a mile paddle, I stopped at a little sand bar and caught about a dozen small waves.  Then I see this set coming that is much bigger than anything else that day.  Good thing I was on such a big board, because I was able to get out fast and turned right in front of it.  I went flying down the line, single fin sliding down the face as I went.  I could tell that it was going to throw, so I slowed down some and crouched for the barrel.  Not long in the tube I see a sponger about 20 feet in front of me all wide eye'd.  Literally a deer in the headlights moment.......I chose to bail rather than run him down.  Not sure if I would have made it out anyway, and it was still a great wave.

After I surfaced I remembered that my friend, and very good stand up paddle surfer, was on the beach taking pictures because he is currently injured.  Turns out he got some shots!  Paddled back home not long after that and caught another 10 or so knee slappers.  Stoked...

Yeah big board!  Its fun to get back on a big board and remember how fun the glide is. Still, hopefully we can get some NW swells here and I can get back on my 8'6". Thanks for the comments!

Sweet!
That musta been the set of the weekend in the SoBay.  Cool that you got pics!
I SUP surfed Torrance Beach yesterday (Sat), and it was dismal--knee high walls on the beach.
Today, I prone paddled MB pier to El Porto/back, and didn't see any waves like yours.
Way to go!

That looked like the random wave on Sat, I thought there was at least two more behind it.
