Naish One 12'6" Inflatable
« on: October 31, 2012, 09:15:56 AM »
I just read some stuff about the Naish One 12 6. Wondering if anyone has one and what their impressions are? Are they rigid, can they be competitive as a downwind board? Can they be surfed in smaller waves (knee to chest high)? How do they compare to a glass/epoxy board in the same board size?

Looks like Naish is going to launch a new format of racing with these - that's an interesting concept. What do people think about that - a one design race format in 12 6 inflatables?

I'm intrigued by the portability but I haven't been able to make the leap to an inflatable. These look pretty cool. I'd love to hear what others have to say about them.

The Naish ONE is very flat - it has next to no nose rocker in it.

It is a great flat water board - and it can surf "very" small waves.

Don't know if I would take it on a downwinder.

The Starboard Astro Touring is a bit more "all around" in that it has more nose rocker.

Yes, it's pretty much flat over most of the length, but the nose on this one does turn up somewhat.
What appears to be a wee bit of tail rocker is due to the fin holder.
Of course, flex in inflatables can also provide "rocker".
  fine for pools  ;)

Hoping to take out the Starboard and Naish inflatables with DJ on the weekend where we will enter them in a series of BOP races and see which one is best.  :P

IMO these new 12'6" inflatables can be raced.. They are light, stable and stiff to paddle.. and also pretty fast.. They would be a great recreational flat water paddling board.. but surfing it might be pushing its limits.. Also downwinding it.. I'm sure surfing and downwinding it is ..do'able.. but it would be more about surviving than enjoying and no match for a real surfing board or downwinding board.

Q:  How long does it take to pump these things up?  Is it something you could realistically do every afternoon after work, or would that be misery/self-flagellation?

Here is a lot more info on the new INflatable Sups on this Post:

http://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php?topic=14632.150

I just got my Mistral from Kayak Sports in Canada..no dealer in the States....Its a 14' Isup and it looks Awesome, I haven't tried it yet, but the bottom is smooth, I can see where its going to be fast...I'm going to GPS it this weekend when I go to the Sailboat. Its a Beautiful board for a Isup.....

Time to inflate them with just a manual pump is about 10 to 15 minutes...the last 5 lbs take as long as the first 10....I use a electric pump with built in rechargable battery, it pumps it up to about 12 lbs then I top off my ULI's to 17....the electric pump takes maybe 3 minutes. or so. I'll post pictures of it when I take it out, Saturday.

Not to hijack, but the 12'6" Uli is a pretty strong contender for what you're laying out as a use case.

I like the Naish but if you're surfing it, you'll want a little kick in there somewhere.

Have you seen this?

One stand out point to me re the Uli 12'6" vs the new Naish and Starboard 12'6" inflatables is that the Uli weighs over 16kg (36lbs).. and the others are a little over 10kg (22lbs).. That weight diference is huge.

I have paddled the ONE. I got it pumped up in a couple minutes but struggled to get past 13 psi.
The board had reverse rocker just sitting there. It paddles well but still floppy. As you stroke the the nose raises  up not helping the glide. The fin is removable and a good size but not so streamlined of housing. I did our time trial with Aij  and was just a minute or so behind where I am usually ahead of him a minute after 24. I am interested in the Tahoe with the tube stringer on the deck to see if that stiffens the board.

Q:  How long does it take to pump these things up?  Is it something you could realistically do every afternoon after work, or would that be misery/self-flagellation?

I have put the clock on myself a few times with the 12'6 Astro using the supplied pump - I can consistently get it to the recommended 14-15lbs from completely flat in around 4 1/2 minutes and have bested 4 minutes* on one occasion (but I have a few extra kgs body mass to throw into it).  Great warmup for your core  ;D

At 120kg the 12'6 Astro carries me surprisingly well (so does the Naish One) but the Astro worked better for me inflated to about 18lbs. At that pressure it was too corky for my 60kg wife, she was happier with it around 12-13lbs. I guess this means its possible to 'ride tune" these boards for different paddlers?

(*could this be another dimension to our fledgling sport?  :-\ )

In theory, there should be no difference between theory and practice, but in practice, there is...

About the weight of the ULI compared to the Naish ONE and Starboard,

I am not sure that the listed weight of 36 lbs is correct.  However, the ULI is available in single or double skin.  My husband and I both have single skin ULI that come in at low 20s in weight, similar to the Naish.  However, even at single skin the ULI skin is much thicker than the Naish.  The Naish feels pretty thin skin compared to my 12'6" single skin ULI.  Also ULIs come with a carbon kevlar stiffing strip on top and bottom; mine has a double kevlar bottom strip, side rail strips and a top strip.  In talking with the guys at ULI they have had some people cut single skin boards on rocks and muscles, so they prefer the double skin.

With the ULI you can get it made how you want, but with the Naish you can order today and have it at your door tomorrow for a little less.

Cheers, Jill

JillRide45:  Do you have a 12'6" single skin Uli?  Or, is it the Lopez or other surf model?  I am very interested in learning more about the various 12'6" iSups.

DavidJohn:  Wondering what real world effect the weight difference might have if the heavier Uli is measurably stiffer?  18 or 19 psi compared to 15 or so?  Particularly with a big (200 plus) paddler atop the board...
