Manhattan Beach, CA SUP surf spots?
« on: October 11, 2012, 03:08:52 PM »
Can anyone recommend places to SUP surf in or near Manhattan Beach, CA?  I'll be in town for a few days for a conference at the end of this month and since I'm driving up I think I'll bring my board for a few dawn patrols &/or evening sessions...

Park at the pier and just head north.  You will see plenty of SUPs, and I think we are a friendly bunch.  Don't go to Porto...just too crowded with shortboards and its (the waves) are all pretty much the same.....if you want no crowds at all head south of the pier.  The waves are shorter and more "dumpy" but its empty.

Hopefully some sandbars develop by then.  Shape is pretty lacking in MB right now.

Have fun up in the South Bay, my old stomping grounds.  Even if you don't SUP at El Porto go and have a nice breakfast at the Beach Hut!  Went to grammar school through high school with the owner, Ronn.   :)

Park at the far south end of El Porto or at the 2 lots between 27th street & 26th street.  Most of the paddlers are keeping to that section which has a decent break depending on how the sand bar lays.   You won't get too much mouth service, but expect some stares if you move North into El Porto proper.  Its never much of an issue, but usually its so crowded its better towards 26th street.

By any chance are you friends with John Ashley?  He has a paddle that I left in his truck and I haven't had time to get down to SD and grab it.  Looking for a paddle ride to LA  :)

Old topic - but I'm headed there next week and would like to get a few mornings in with some surf. Any suggestions? I've contacted tarsan for a rental.

Visiting soon too and have been checking rentals.  Tarsan is expensive. Though easy to just jump in the water from his shop. Thinking of maybe looking for a couple of used wavestorms, and then donate them when I leave.

Unless the swell is smallish, I prefer north or south a bit off the beachbreaks.

For rental of surf-specific board/paddle, contact Jeremy at Olympus Board Shop (310) 214-1800 for rental.  Five minutes from the shop and 1/2 mile south of Redondo Beach Pier you've got about 2.5 miles of beach breaks.  Manhattan Bch/El Porto is about 20 minutes north depending on traffic.

This time of year, this particular stretch of coastline does not get the south swell, unless it is a big south swell.  More likely short period wind swell with afternoon/evening onshore winds.

A paddle out from Tarzan (Redondo Beach) required PFD (store locates inside King's Harbor Marina) and the nearest break from Tarzan is the Break Wall, a local winter-time left hand standout but is pretty flat this time of year.  Tarzan (Hermosa Beach) is a block away from the beach but the waves are pretty crappy around Hermosa Beach Pier.  A paddle north (about 1 mile) gets you to the border of Manhattan Beach and the waves are better from here up to El Porto.

There are reef/point breaks in the area but they are surf-able only during the winter swells.

Thanks, reasonable prices and near me in Torrance. Tarsan used to be by the beach.  At some of the other shops, 2 days rental almost equals a wavestorm.

I guess I've been lucky and caught old mans cove a couple of times in the summer.

Had a fun week, got a rental from Olympus, rode right by the pier, everyone was friendly, not a lot of people out each morning, at least until about 745 when I had to go to work.
