Happy Birthday Spicoli!
« on: October 10, 2012, 09:04:42 AM »
The surf cinema in the next town over is holding a "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" retrospective in honor of the flick's 30th year of release.

Not surprisingly, radio ads are making use of some of Spicoli's more memorable quotes.

Anyone of came of surfing age around the time of this movie, especially anyone who did so in California, probably recalls dealing with the stoner/slacker surfer stereotype that Sean Penn nailed with great effect. While neither confirming nor denying any stoner/slacker tendencies of my own, I think I'll have to catch this flick again....

"..surfing's not a sport, it's a way of life, it's no hobby. It's a way of looking at that wave and saying, 'Hey bud, let's party!'"

While Jeff Spicoli is one of the most memorable movie characters of the 80’s and Sean Peen did a fantastic job of playing him, the character was definitely a very overdone stereo type (which was probably the point).  When the movie came out, long hair was already out of fashion in surf culture so the Spicoli character was a few years outdated as I recall.  Regardless, it was an enjoyable and hilarious movie.

Disagree...graduated San Dieguito HS in '79...plenty of longhairs still running around. Although the Flock of Seagulls crowd was starting to fill in

I wish they'd make a sequel with where a where are they now format. Is Spicoli a millionaire manufacturing surf  gear, or maybe running a surf school in Indo, Judge Reinholt managing an Olive Tree, Robert Romanus still scalping tickets?

If there ever was a sequel, as suggested by Tom, I think the real question we would need answered would be: "Would Spicoli be riding a SUP?"

Spicoli is one of the best characters ever and the guy who pulled it off will hardly even acknowledge it. How great would it be to see him break into Jeff out of the blue sometime during an interview or something? Spicoli is a bit over the top, (perfectly) just like all the other characters but it pretty much nails being in suburban California at that time. We all knew that dude and that chick and that mall....the little social cliches, jobs, school, were all fairly spot on too I have always thought...probably more so now when I look around now or look back.

I think Spicoli has that surf school, (and growing a little weed in the jungle on the side)

Judge is probably selling cars inland.

Romanus is a bail bondsman.  :D

Story goes, Cameron Crowe, very baby faced at the time, attended Clairemont High for a semester as a senior in '79 to research the book. Only the Principal and one counselor knew he wasn't a student.
