Experience sailing the Starboard SUPer 12'6
« on: September 03, 2012, 12:03:04 AM »
Hi, first and foremost, I'm not on that company's payroll, but I'd like to report on recent experiences on the 12-6, with a 6.5m SUPerlight sail.

Frankly, I was impressed. At first I was puzzled, the sail didn't rig well, it would fold at the top, and the board wouldn't point up.
The trick was to rig the sail loose, not tight. Then it can take from 5 up to 20 knots, easy. Never thought I'd see a Dacron sail depower like that in my life.

The board is excellent for teaching - I had excellent results lately. The sail is so light that beginners can use the 6.5m right away, however you must use lighter booms to teach on a 6.5m.

The board is OK for cruising, although it doesn't point up like a dedicated racing windsurfer thing, of course. And it's great for fun sailing, a bit of freestyle. Here's a clip realised in 16+ knots, the board handled itself quite well !

This puzzles me.
I have no doubt that the tricks you are doing require lots of skill and practice, but why do them?
It looks as if you're having some sort of seizure out there on the water.

Seizure LOL.

Forget the skills. Freestyle (long or short board) is an extremely complete sport. You work equally hard pushing and pulling, tri- and biceps, abs and dorsals.

That's why I do it. That it's fun comes second to the sporting side of it.

On the SUP, in fair winds, it's doubly difficult - the board requires a fair amount of out-of-harness pull. Was fun to try the package though...

hmm looks kind of fun.  i must admit one of the reasons i bought my SUPer 12'6 was to eventually sail it.  i just dont know if i have the patience to learn it!  also i think it would be a BLAST to sail a sup in heavy winds but im sure id have a loong learning curve before i could do it.

If you were a film producer, I'd burn down the theater.

Very annoying video.  Somebody had to say it!   :P

For a good movie I go see a Coen's.
