Best "surfing" 12'6?
« on: August 22, 2012, 12:56:26 PM »
Of course this is a relative characteristic of a board designed for open water paddling, but I wanted to see what people thought about the surfing abilities of the various 12'6 boards out there.  Just basic ability to turn the board on the wave, nothing fancy.

I was more interested in production model boards, things that are generally available to most people in most places.  Obviously it is possible to design a super light custom 12'6 board that would surf pretty good, but I would like to hear about what is being produced for general consumption.

Even though I paddle a Jimmy Lewis Albatross, (excellent 12'6" downwinder), it's a rather timid turning surfer.
I have paddled Surftech Munoz Wateryder and it's a loose turning 12 footer, even on a single fin setup, it can go quad.
Still got to test PSH Hull Paddler, that's coming soon.

The Psh 12'6" looks like it surfs well  ;D. Also comes with 5 fin boxes!

Indeed the PSH does surf well for a board that long.  It makes those tiny waves actually look pretty fun.

What are the dimensions of that board?  Does it have enough volume to do a downwind run, or would it be really slow and have too much rocker compared to open ocean designs?

The starboard 12'6" has always been a fine all around board. Surfs well with the thrusters in, glides nice with them out. It would be very good on a downwinder, and it sails well. I think the 12'2" is even more versatile, but the 12'6" is much more stable.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

The Starboard 12'2 x 26" being the one designed by Mark which Starboard no longer makes?  A shame as lots of people say good things about that board.

Too bad they didn't make a similar in the 27-28" width for people who want something less than 30" wide (but also not a 26" board).

I have been enjoying the heck out of the 12.6 surf race from south county surf.  The AHRRG. Been using it for about a year and love it.  Super stable and surfs great.  Great for surf, race, and flat water paddles.

It comes in two widths 30 and 32.  And it is only 4.25 inches thick.

I believe the Psh is 29 or 30" wide. I have only seen this video and the one of Blane surfing it so I'm not sure how fast in flat water or how well it would do on a downwind run. I love the look though, the hull bottom seems to work.

The 12'6  Hobie 2011 model surfs super well for a race board !!  I love surfing mine along the coast from Hawaii Kai to Kahala.

I've been enjoying my Ron House Coastal Cruiser on small days, picks up everything and has nice nose rocker to break through waves when paddling out

SEA, after the delays, the container gets pulled for customs inspection...  Robert just got it, I'm going to try to pick it up tomorrow.  Its a 14', I do not expect it to surf well, but I sure want to get it out on the water for a run.

I had forgotten that video about the Hobie, that was pretty cool.
