Wood plans/kits and tools for designing a SUP?
« on: August 16, 2012, 12:31:35 PM »
I ***finally*** finished my Kaholo 14 and now I'm thinking about building another SUP. Anyone know of any other plans/kits out there besides the CLC Kaholo? Ideally something more suited to flatwater since we don't have one of them ocean things here in Seattle. Nothing wrong with the Kaholo, just looking for variety.

Alternatively, are there any tools/software out there to help design a board? I know there are profesional 3D tools out there but they also come with steep price tags and learning curves. Wouldn't mind doing something similar to the Kaholo but maybe a bit narrower but don't know how to go about creating a set of plans from scratch. Starting to see the appeal of foam since you can shape it as you go along - something you can't easily do in wood.

someone make a plugin for AKU shaper that convert your design into a internal frame.  go check out this hollow wood board forum, the plugin is somewhere in there: http://www.grainsurf.com/forum/

I have been thinking about doing a 12'6" board, so many ideas, so little time.  I still have not really finished my Kaholo, but that has not kept me from paddling it.

Aku shaper is exactly the sort of program I was looking for! Going to download and start toying with it this weekend.

Jethrow: that board of yours is crazy looking, I love it!

Hi Cyclo,

very interesting project!

jethrow's board quite interesting too...

I previously built 2 ply wood boards , 1 14' and 1 12'6" few pix visible here. 14' is awesome board which drove me on few local race victories. 12'6 twinfin is amazing downwinder...

http://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php?topic=7938.0

I did not made plan but just sketches, the 12'6 I built without frames and it was very easy construction. I made few models with cardboard to see the shape. link between bottom and sides is stitched then glued/ internally glassed.
I guess you should go on some traditional boatbuilding sites where you may find free softwares for developpable surface boat building and epoxy/plywood  building techniques.

about shape I would advise a rounded bottom much narrower than deck. depending your skill and size/weight but 24" wide bottom and 28" wide deck with 5" thickness.  so bottom V shape fwd then rounded then almost flat at middle and slight V aft.  the trapezoid shape ( as dory section)gives much more stability for same width.
below a sketch of what can be done. 16' x 28", multi purpose...   frame every 0.5 m... can be adapted. slight V aft and deep V fore.

Hey! I love your board! I have been looking for it on the WSS site and nothing yet. Any clue on when they will start to carry it? I would love to start this one this fall!

Shape 3d has a hollow wood function but never looked at it. I will try take a look and see if I can even cut cut something out from it.

Found out how to do it on shape 3d unfortunately. just design it then you just have to go to export and choose hollow wood plan you should be able to then ether print it out stick it to the wood and cut it out by hand or take it to go get cnc cut.

Check out clearwoodpaddleboards.com
Randy has some awesome wood board designs and is always working on something new. Saw a 16 unlimited on his FB page the other day that he is currently working on.
Plus he is in Oregon so not too far from you.

I just finished this one with the woodsurfboardsupply frame kit.  it came out pretty sweet.  I am in Shelton, not to far from seattle.  You are welcome to come check out my small backyard shop if you want.  I have built over a dozen SUP's now, and might be able to give you a tip or two.
