Getting still shots from GoPro video footage...?
« on: July 20, 2012, 08:32:50 AM »
 Hi all,
just wondering what is the simplest way to capture (extract?) still pics from some of my G-P footage?

My raw footage comes out as Quicktime video, which I convert to WMV files so I can use the Windows Movie Maker to do something with them. Is there a way to get pics with the WMM program? or do I need a more specialized photo editing program?

Thanks in advance! Pete.
Pete.

Play it in full screen mode, then do a screen capture?

in the window movie maker, there should have a option to capture a still pic of the video.  Once i get back home, i can find the where that option is.

I just open my vid with picasa, it doesn't allow you to edit but it is very easy to get stills. And the program is free ...

From video - easiest way is simply a screen shot. Then photoshop if necessary. Works well - shot this, this morn

you have widows; easiest way is to screen shot and paste in to MS Paint.

holt ALT + Print Screen with your QUICKTIME screen a decent size on your monitor. i say quiktime because it will be a higher resolution and therefore your image will be clearer.

open paint, paist the image, and then just move it so you can just crop the screen and not see the quicktime movie player.

you don't need to get any new software, your OS has everything you need.

Thanks for getting this thread back up!

Last month when I was trying to figure this out, I went into WMM, and did the "capture an image" (or whatever it is). This did work, but it turned out to be just a small, same sized image as the "preview" screen that you work in. Still need to play around and figure out how to get a full size image.

Selfishly I want everyone to come forth with their best possible pictures, so after 10+ years of non-linear editing (with Windows) I found that the quickest way to isolate frames is with:

MPEG Streamclip: http://www.squared5.com/

This is freeware that will also allow you to pare down your raw footage before taking it to a heavier weight program like Adobe Premiere.  Premiere will extract stills, but there is a lot of overhead (e.g. launch time, features . . .) associated with Premiere.  Save your Premiere work for final editing, music . . . .

--> File --> Export Frame.  Stills come out full resolution 1920 X 1080 (double click on photo to see full sized), no crappy screen grab, or file translation necessary.
