Roof mount question
« on: June 23, 2012, 04:33:46 AM »
I have a 10'6" mounted on a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the sup taxi. I was curious to how you would know if you need the bumper strap? I don't want to do any damage to the board but I notice some people use the strap. I only have maybe 3.5 ft over hang from each suptaxi bracket. I was just wonder because I will making an 8 hr drive with the board mounted to the roof.

Thanks in advance.

Personally I would not use a bumper strap.

I would use pads on the roof racks.. Use straps and not bungee or rope.. not tighten it to tight.. and not worry if it moves around a little.

You will be fine with just the sup taxi. nothing else is really needed when used properly.

You have a plenty of roofline for safety's sake.

Sprry guys another question. I usually just put my paddle in the car for short distance but I'll need the space for the trip. Do you recommend putting the board and paddle in the bag then mounting to the sip taxi?

I'm sure it will be ok but IMO it's not ideal .. If you're goings do that it's best to tie your paddle on separate (on top of.. or beside the board) and preferably in its own paddle bag.

I would go with DJ and secure the paddle separately. Securing more than one fragile item with one strap is potentially asking for a problem. That said I carry 6 10,000lb ratchet straps, 4 standard straps, and at least 100' of rope in my truck at all times. I never know what I might get to haul home and haven't lost of ruined a load that I tied down yet (I don't count the time I shot the hide-abed couch out the back of my pickup when I was 19 since it wasn't tied down).

I have a set of standard surf straps but seems like alot of extra strap will be flapping around.. Do you guys know where I can get shorter straps for the paddle? Possible security straps

Did you try couch surfing?

This one looks more like couch skiing

Just cut em down to whatever size you want. It's just nylon webbing, cut it with a knife then heat seal the ends with a flame or a soldering iron or hot knife. Don't forget to cut them at an angle so you can feed them into the buckle easily.
