inflatable sup review red paddle company
« on: June 04, 2012, 05:47:12 PM »
just took out my red paddle 10'6" inflatable today for he first time. back ground: i am 5'11 and 210lbs.
i have been SUPing for over a year now. no other board experience prior. flatwater 98%.
currently own an amundson aquaglide 11'6" which is my everyday board. been on bunch of rental stuff.
one day I will try windsurfing with it....only attempted to surf once. not pretty  ;D (FUN,Fun, fun but nothing like have board or paddle smack you in the head and the skin off the top of my left foot
ok to review:
pulled out of bag on site. thought valve was in correct position. stopped 1/2 way at 8 psi not problem. next 7 little makes you work. dissconnected. valve leaked.arrrrrrghhh. it needed just a little turn. pump up again. plenty warmed up now. when you pop off valve you get small wooosh on air. checked by reconnecting pump. down about 1-2 psi.  >:(  now down to 12-13 psi. decided to try that. recommended 12-15 psi. the higher value for us larger dudes.
its got 2 velco straps for paddle which makes nice handle. no middle handle like typical board. weighs under 30 lbs. comes with a nice pump, fix kit in ziplock, and backpack.
finish is great. one thing i don't like is the red paddle logo on bottom of board. can you say more
drag? just sort of glued on the bottom. seems tough as nails. 1 d-ring nose and 1 on tail for leash. 3 fins. not removable.
experience: tracks well. i needed more psi. feet in water except during hard paddling with small
banana effect. feel on deck softer than my hard board but not bad. even seems little more stable
than my hard board? about same width and thickness. nose flutter a little in wind/small chop but slightly under inflated for me.
glide ok. hard board sooo much better performance. much more work for equal performance
but inflatable is 1 foot shorter and easier to turn. not sure how to compare  3 short fins on inflatable vs one long fin on hard board.

plan on adding couple more tie downs on nose.

questions?

plan on going out again tomorrow with higher psi and see results and take some pictures. red paddle website says 20 psi ok for normal use. tested to over x3 psi fo normal use.

you might be surprised how much a few extra psi can help with an inflatable SUP,

some notes:
- release the hose, some air will escape (pressure drop a little)
- when you compress air it gets warm and expands
- water is usually cooler than air, so after you launch it the pressure can drop a little too
- leave board on a beach in the sun on a warm day and air will get warm and expand, pressure will go up.

nearly all brands now can take over 15psi (check the manual 1st),
it's worth the effort  :)

I have a red air inflatable 10'6" myself.  I put it to max psi.  I weigh about 230 and I'm 6'5".  It's a fun board and the quality is great though it's a bit small for someone at my weight, in my opinion.  I would certainly recommend it to anyone under 200 pounds though.  The newer models are even better with an improved deck pad and normal carrying handle.  The Red Air Mega (10'8" x 36) would be MUCH better for me but I haven't tried it.

I've noticed that 6" thick boards are becoming more common.
