Locking Roof Rack Straps
« on: May 23, 2012, 04:38:08 PM »
Just wanted to pass this info along to everyone out there. A Buddy of mine turned me on to these locking roof rack straps that are 16ft  long and are only about $35 for two, from lowes. Most other lockable straps are almost $100. I just got a pair.

Thanks
TomKat

I got a set of these or something similar from Home Depot.  Then I found a set that was 9ft.  Much easier to deal with when threading the strap through the locking mechanism than the longer tie down.

The ones for $100.00 have stainless steel cable in them and also lock. It just makes it a little harder for them to steal the boards IF they have bolt cutters.
Just checked Lowes site and the ones you mentioned ALSO have steel cable in them.
Great buy! I wish I had seen these before I paid $100.00.

I was not able to find these in my local store so I ordered a pair to see how they work.  I have a couple of set os the Kanulocks.  One set works great and the other never worked properly.  Hopefully these will be a good solution as they are less than half the price.

I have Steel Core's.  Like this.  http://www.steelcore.net/index.html

all hardware is stainless, and whats not pictured is the protective padding/cover that covers the lock mechanisim itself to protect your gear when cinched down. They also have steel cables inside. takes a bit longer to strap your gear down, but small price to pay for added security

I wouldn't be surprised if the Steelcore's are the same as the ones that are sold at Home Depot.  They look identical.  Just repackaged with a fancy name for 5x the price.

Any vibration in the straps? Any humming producing rub on the boards?
Taller than most, shorter than others.

Take at least 1-2 turns on the straps and they wont hum.

I probably overpaid for the Sea to Summit locking SPTs but they do work very well and have a protective coating on them.  Also, they never come loose when they are locked down.

Those are the same straps I have and they are pricey BUT do work very well. I see they have 18 ftrs. now. I wish I had got them because with 4 boards AND bags< I don't have much left over.

I got the pair of $35 dollar locking tie downs from lowes. Thanks to Tomkats, i save myself $70 on two locking straps. Look exactly like the Steelcore straps and work well. the only thing it is missing is the padded cover around the lock mechanisim.  But i will rather keep the 70 dollar over the extra padding. ;)

Same here. Thanks Tomkats.  I ordered a pair also, which should arrive Monday.

More importantly, my new Blair 10-4 is in a trailer on its way from Joe Blair's shop and arrives tonight! It looks like this Father's Day will include a little water-time for this daddy.

I just ordered 4....I had ordered 6 but it said only 4 were available..... :(

From your picture these look exactly like the steelcores I bought 4 years ago. They didn't have a protective cover over the locking mech just the crimp/clasp at the end of the strap just like these.

These don't hum like the thin ones.
