Maui Downwind Videos
« on: May 21, 2012, 11:25:46 AM »
The wind forecast was calling for light trades 5-15mph but it always seems to be a little stronger here on Maui than what's predicted. We had some really fun sections with wind gusting up into the mid 20s. I had the camera on my hat and once my head got hot the camera fogged up and I couldn't film some of the better sections of the run.
Got buzzed by a windsurfer around 2:45. I think it's the first time that a windsurfer actually went behind me.

Here's some footage of the Maliko run with a north swell. The waves on this day were between 6-12'. The run gets much easier to navigate in the summer. There's still a couple of shallow reefs to avoid but we don't get many north swells in the summer.

Not the strongest wind but the feeling of the vid is so fun.  And man the colors in the water were epic.  The cool thing about summer months is that was can skim right over the reefs in very shallow water and the bottom supplies a color trip by itself.  The more paddlers in the frame the better.  Very cool and great music.

I really liked your angle on people right in the beginning.  Almost felt like the cam in a movie spinning around the main subject.

Well the second vid shows you the difference between winter and summer.  Winter where you pay miles ahead attention and summer where you can draw just about any line you wish.  Plus the emotional difference between sun and clouds in video.

Cool videos, thanks Jeremy for sharing!

If you are running into fogging issues, I strongly suggest you get the anti-fog strips and keep recharging them in the oven after every few trips.  Also, blast cold AC air into the housing for 2 minutes before closing, this keeps the air inside dry so that when the processor heats up, you won't get fogging.

JR has a wtrprf cam so no housing.  When I've used one of these types of cams in the past, putting cam in a container of rice when not in use seemed to work the best.

Now I do have a housing and I use this stuff called FOGTECH by MotoSolutions on the inside surface of my lens port.  Works perfectly so far.  But it's weird inspecting the port... When you look towards the inside of the housing, thru the port, without the cam inside, you see this mottled pattern on the lens port.  But when you look out from the other, LCD side, it's crystal clear... which is, of course, what counts.

Also from Moto Solutions I've been using Raincoat on outside of lens port which beads water up into tight drops which either fall off or are not really a bother since they don't cause a blur on the lens.

Both of these products are for POLYCARBONATE not glass.  For glass I've heard of guys using Rainex but no 1st or even 2nd hand inspection of results.

Learning Jeremy's technique is quite an experience. I feel like I'm back to square 10--not all the way to 1, but definitely a lot to concentrate on. I couldn't even watch where I was going. Nearly wandered off to Spartans later on. And my stroke went completely to hell, though you don't need much when you're catching the micro glides and stepping up to bigger ones. I know I was driving HM nuts working on it the last few runs we did, but it's fascinating. Someday it might even be fast for me.

Met some friends down at the harbor and we took the 3:00 shuttle up to Maliko gulch and scored some long glides back down.

That last video is sweet.

J.Riggs - What kind of camera are you using and are you holding it in your hand to shoot?  You have some really nice shots.  Forward, backward, sideways, makes a nice video!

Thanks for posting.
