iSUP pump = kite pump= camping pump?
« on: May 20, 2012, 02:41:10 AM »
Is the pump for inflatable sups the same as the pump kiters use? And the same as used for inflatable matrasses? Because that will be good news, the more universal things are, the better.

And are there many differences between pumps and the amount of pressure they can producce(12-20 PSI)?

kite pump is similar, but usually a kite runs much lower pressure, so the SUP pumps will usually be stronger design.
(the valve & valve connector is different too)

the Bravo brand "SUP pump" supplied with many inflatable SUP is "ok" up to about 18psi - the gauge only reads up to 15psi, so you have to pump off the dial and guess it. (takes about 5mins for average fit adult)

the K-pump is currently one of the only hand pumps that can easily do over 20psi. (the Uli pump can too I think)

some hand pumps are single action (down only) and some are double action (up and down).
(we used to use Bravo double action pump a few years ago, but the newer high volume single action is way more reliable).

Bravo also make an electric pump that can inflate a SUP to 14.5psi in about 5mins (connects direct to a car battery or similar 12V)

you can also use a compressor like for nail guns / painting, or installed and connected to your car by a fan belt(?), but as the volume is large you should have a storage tank to make the job easier.

I've also heard of people to use a diving tank to inflate SUPs - but refill the tank might cost more than a compressor install.

I filled mine with Nitrogen recently--I have a couple of big nitrogen bottles kicking around from car racing, and one of them is still pretty full, so I figured what the heck. They're big, clumsy bottles, but they're cheap to fill. Might be a solution for someone. You need a regulator of course.

hmm, you might be on to something there...

nitrogen is less likely to migrate through rubber than is oxygen... also exhibits less pressure change with temperature swings...

To airSUP, what do you mean with K-pump and do you know where the sell them (online) and do you also have an URL of the Bravo pumps?

Another question, is it possible to destroy a iSUP by (hand)pumping to hard? Will it bang like a balloon?

There are some nice quality 12v pumps on the market. Out here they are big with the 4x4 truck and buggy set, who air down for playing in the desert, then have to air up to drive home.

Nicer units with a reservior can be installed, usually on the undercarriage. Most are wired into power rather than belt driven.

Would be worth your while if you're playing with a lot of inflatables on a regular basis.

here's a link to k-pump www.k-pump.com
you could definitely destroy any inflatable SUP with one of these if you wanted to.

Bravo are sold by most inflatable boat shops (on and off line)

all inflatable SUP are made with some kind of drop stitch core like the attached image:
thousands of threads linking top and bottom layers of fiber reinforced PVC.
over inflation will break these threads and you will hear a very loud BANG.

the "max pressure" mainly depends on the thread density, which also makes the board rigid. higher density = higher pressure = more rigid. (and also the valve quality and side wall construction play a part)

usually brands will recommend "XX" psi for a board, you can usually exceed this a bit safely. I've heard some people say "up to 30psi may be possible" (I've not personally tried this and don't recommend it without wearing ear protection  :o )...

exceeding the brand's "max pressure" of course your mileage will vary if you leave it on the beach in the sun all day... (think loud BANG!)

so check the brand's recommend pressure rating before getting too excited with that k-pump

note: I'm nothing to do with either K-pump or Bravo.
