Durability comparison question from a newbie
« on: May 08, 2012, 11:36:18 AM »
New to the sport and ready to invest in my first SUP.  I've visited a few local shops by me (Jersey Shore) and in trying to narrow down my choices, I've also started considering the overall durability of the boards I've seen that are good options for and available to me.  I've narrowed the list to a Riviera Riviera 11'6" and a Starboard Blend AST White 11'2" (I found a good package deal on the SB that will bring the cost delta to about $100).

After researching the construction processes and technologies and materials used, I am alas unable to discern between the two and answer the question "Which in the end will be more durable."  So, if someone can help me with that one, I'd greatly appreciate it.  I understand nothing will be impervious but in general, which will hold up more to elements and the occasional paddle ding.

I will use the board in varying conditions:  open long distance ocean paddling, occasional small surf (3' - 5'), the bay/inlet, lake/flatwater.  I am 5'5", 145# but will also occasionally have a small child sitting in front of me.  That will add between 30 - 45 #'s.

Thanks in advance.

Both pretty reputable brands with epoxy construction.  I happen to have a Starboard and am very happy with durability, but I'd be interested to see if anyone points out much appreciable difference between these two--especially given your size and how you'll be using it--doesn't sound like you'll be thrashing things much.

Personal opinion is to go with the Riviera, just because I like them, but either board will be fine for what you want to do.  They both have the same construction, so should wear and hold up about the same.   With them being that close, I think it's time to start going for aesthetics. ;D

I have had the 11'6 and also the 10'6 a Riviera...reasonably durable and VERY HEAVY. =)

The 11'6 surfs like poop FYI.

Taller than most, shorter than others.

I know the SB but not the Riviera because they don't sell them here but I did check it out on their site.. I'm guessing the SB will be a fair bit lighter and I think slightly more durable because of the construction differences.. But looking at the shapes of the two I would recommend the Riviera if you want to paddle two up.. Or mostly flat water.. The Blend is a nice board and would probably surf better but it's a bit of a struggle paddling two up because it's not real wide and also pretty thin in the rails.. You should try and demo both before you buy.

Love the SB Blend but have you looked at that exact model? If I recall correctly, the white AST comes with no deck grip at all which is a significant factor especially if you want to bring a child on board with you.

Thanks PT.  Yes the shop will install a center pad for meas part of the package.  At a small additional cost, they'll install a 3/4 which is probably the way I'll go.

I have a Starboard Drive in AST blue and it chips very easily along the rails from paddle hits.  I also have creased the board from rail to rail across the top from the nose hitting the bottom.  I surf a  3-5 foot beach break.  The board surfs awesome though.

I have the Starboard Blend AST Silver 11' 2" (which includes the windsurf option) and I had them put rail tape on until I learned to paddle correctly (avoids chips). I'm very happy with the durability of it. I have Starboard windsurfers and love their quality.
