Windsurf fins on SUP?
« on: May 02, 2012, 09:21:00 AM »
I'm a newbee at SUP and I was wondering " why I couldn't OR shouldn't try using WS fins on my Starboard Blend or Drive"? I mainly PB on flatwater. Would there be any advantage or dis-advantage to using WS fins. Would any of these fins work in the surf. I did use the search engine but did not find a suitable answer to using WS fins on SUPs.

Any of them will work and give you better tracking than the stock SB fin

You may have to adj those old fins (either grind down or shim) to fit the SB box

If you have any other questions feel free to PM me here

experiment with your fins it is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to   see changes in the way your board feels rides and surfs,

flatwater will work for sure.  surf fins generally have a thicker profile and get lift at lower speeds, windsurfing fins are generally thinner and are meant to lift at higher speeds.  they might work ok, compare the thickness and foil to some sup and longboard fins and or try them.

I have found that windsurf fins are thicker and have a little more drag than the new SUP race fins. Check the amount of overhang at the base of the fin. There are US and Euro base windsurf fins. I think the Starboard box is a US Base width. Euro base are thicker.
