Finally!
« on: April 12, 2012, 05:40:51 PM »
Finally picked up a new board - Starboard Coast Runner brushed carbon.

Many thanks to Kurt (paddledaddy) for the good deal, and to wilanz for pointing me in the right direction on several boards to try.

(oh, and please enjoy the free viewing of my daughter's chalk art as well)

Thanks guys.  I've only had a couple of short paddles on it.  I hope to spend several hours on it this weekend, then I'll post some thoughts.  It's different than anything else I've been on, but I really like it so far.

Sorry for the humongous pictures.

I'm sure you'll get to like it a lot. I paddle an SB ACE 14' x 25" and for flat water, light chop and small downwinds (my most frequent conditions) it's a blast. In the not so far future I'm looking forward to a Coast Runner to round up the quiver for those wild days.
Enjoy !

I've gotten a couple of short paddles in, but was really looking forward to this weekend to catch a downwinder or two.  We've got a great wind forecast (for Florida), but looks like lots of lightning to go with that wind.  Really bummed about this.  We'll see what happens.

Love the board, but would love a good session to be able to give a better review.

You'll love the way it catches a glide with the slightest wind. And I'm guessing that being the carbon version it will be even quicker...my AST C.R. weighs 35lbs...have you weighed yours yet? Just wondering.

Weighed in at 28-29 pounds.  Would have preferred to get a good deal on a used AST, but they are hard to find.  Still a little scared of the carbon. My old Surftech Randy French is 42 pounds, so I love pulling the CR off the top of the truck.

I took it about 3/4 a mile straight into 10-15 mph winds on Sunday, then glided back.  Very cool downwind. Not surprising that it doesn't cut straight into the wind/wave like a piercing hull, but I was surprised at well it angles into the wind and handles side chop.

No biggie......you've got more of a chance of getting attacked by a shark than you do getting hit by lightening.

Hmmm, or is it you've got a better chance of getting hit by lightening than getting attacked by a shark??   ??? ???

Ah hell, I don't know.......just be careful out there.

Easy now - a bodyboarder  got killed by a great white today.

I'm pretty sure those lightning stats assume that you're not going out of your way to make yourself a target.

Anyway, paddling in a driving rainstorm doesn't sound like much fun.  Wonder what the odds are that we'll get the wind without all that unpleasantness.  Probably not good.

Nice! I've been waffling over another board, maybe a Naish glide 14, or a JL M-14, etc but I so love my Coast Runner... Maybe what I need is a carbon version.  8)

Let's keep this thread going.... Nothing wrong with some Coast Runner Love!!!

While I'm at it, maybe some Coast Runner improvements ...
One question for Starboard/B.Szy..   ...why the reduced volume vs. the open
Ocean?  The reduced rocker would have sufficed.

Whatever

I feel that the Coast Runner is shaping up to be a very interesting board, one to cover a broad range of conditions. Interesting, it's bow, compared to that of the ACE, seems smaller. Still bulbous (and it works so nice) but smaller. Is the reduced volume due to this?
