I got distracted at 3:00 when he mentioned that SIC makes a twelve-foot-long board:  "The 12 foot SICs might be more suitable..."  Then I realized he said "The 12 foot six might be..."  Then I realized maybe nobody but me pronounces "SIC" like "sick" instead of "S-I-C".  Or do they?

So I'm the only one mesmerized by the girl balancing in the background?

That's funny, I didn't notice her before you mentioned it. I think that's Hannah Hill, great paddler, great racer, stoked downwind addict and super good kid. My surfing buddy whenever the waves are good at the event center. I think we're the only two people that do it consistently. She's an up and coming racer, you'll be seeing her name a lot if she keeps it up. Another product of the Big Wind young racer development program. She finished second in the Women's Elite 17 and under Gorge Paddle Challenge race, and I think she was about 12th overall.

No one would. She is astonishingly mature and poised for such a young person. Beautiful girl. I'd say "where was she when I was seventeen" but her parents might not have been born when I was 17.

All have a safe holiday.  One of my sons went wheels up from a deployment in the Middle East on his way home today, arriving Sunday at his home, Fort Bragg.  Home of the Special Forces Command.  Although it is nice when people recognize military members and appreciate their service ( which should be every day), his day is in November, Veterans Day.  Memorial Day is to honor those service member killed fighting for our country.  He does not want Memorial Day to be his day.

Thanks for that seldom. A few years ago a friend sent me a memorial day email that said "thank you for your service." I replied "I'm not dead yet".  Haven't heard from him since. He might not understand my puckish sense of humor.

I think that's why we get along.

You often hear about soldiers who die 'defending our freedom' on Memorial Day.  I believe they died doing our nation's political will.  Sometimes that political will would qualify as defending our freedom and others wouldn't.  So if one really cares about our youth that serve, it's terribly important to choose our politicians wisely.

I think a lot of them died defending their buddies, which is as good a reason to die as any.  I think it's fair to assume any soldier who died was where they were because because he or she believed they were doing the right thing. After all, even if you were drafted you could refuse to go, or run, or just not show up. Even the second world war, which turned out to be a reasonably moral war to fight, had plenty of detractors within the USA. As an amatuer student of history I'd say we had little reason to participate until Pearl Harbor. It wasn't until Germany surrendered that the real implications of Nazi power were made clear.

I don't judge the actions of servicemen and women in political terms. I judge the media bullshit that the event generates--as bullshit.
