Hey Paddle Bum
I live on the Cape and I surf or paddle my Avanti daily. (11'2 x 36" wide 230 liters)
I have had a combined weight of over 450 lbs on it and it did not sink...
Anytime you would like to try it just call me... I'll PM you my phone number

I LOVE paddling it, but I have lost 55 lbs since October and I am buying a much smaller Surf SUP. Who knows... I might be convinced to sell it when my new board is in. And if you are 7' x 350 you are probably pretty convincing  :o

Here is a picture that shows the boards immensity : I am 6' x 295 lbs in this picture.
I floated me high and dry, the rails were not even underwater.

Ok... I'll post some very embarrassing pictures to demonstrate the float and surfability.. sheesh  :-\

I hope some real life pictures will help some big folks out there. Brochure shots don't tell the whole story.

Big and tall Sup  There are a few choices that will float you and you can have fun on.  There needs to be a balance of Volume and Stability (and for me, fun in the surf).  I really like the South County Boards because they combine all three.  Even the 10 x 35 x 5 10er surfs fun and will float you.  If you want a short board feel go to the 9er like stoneaxe is saying.  I sold my 10er off to a guy that was 340lbs after I rode the 9er.  The 9er is a blast in the surf and is very comfortable and easy to catch waves.

The bigger starboards will work too.  I have surfed them also and they will keep you dry and they surf too.

Bigger 14' raceboards that are wider would be good if you wanted to flatwater paddle but they are no fun in the surfzone on the east coast compared to the abouve mention boards.

Supthecreek,
I'm sure you were jesting about "embarrasing" pictures.  Looks like you're having a stone cold blast to me.

SlowOldJim... Thanks for the kind words...
I just don't like to show the world how big I had let myself get.

Those pics were taken in Sept 2011, about 2 months after I first got on a SUP.
I was in the worst shape of my life. SUP saved me :D

I have lost 55lbs since then...and still dropping...  just surfing and paddling.

SUP... I just can't say how much it gives me everyday

Angulo makes a 12 board for fishing that will hold you no problem.

Check out angulodesigns.com. The board is the "Dawg"

I'm noticing more and more that width is the key for the big boys.

Still not totally sure how that effects the boards ability to go rail to rail to generate speed.

At 6'2 & 280 (Holy crap!) and just turned 50 I've been flat water paddling and doing a few races here and there since about this time last year. I've been venturing into the surf for the first time over the last month with no surf background at all and starting to enjoy small surf up to 3ft on my starboard Atlas (12 x 33, 236 litres). The Atlas floats me and my 95 lb 9yo son just fine (unlike his dad, there's not an ounce of fat on him).

I've tried a couple of shorter, wider boards around the 190-200 litre mark but they just don't hold me up enough for comfort. For now I'm happy to try to catch a couple of hundred waves on the Atlas & figure a few things out before moving on...SupTheCreek thanks for those excellent pics, I'm real interested in seeing what you end up on next.

In theory, there should be no difference between theory and practice, but in practice, there is...

I'm 230 and have had nearly 280 on my Surftech 11.6 Bamboozle with no problemos.  That NRS Big Baron looks good too if you want an inflatable.

Peter I had a Starboard Avanti on Nantucket all last summer and it will be back down there again this summer if you want to try it. An Atlas Extra, Fisherman, or Big Daddy could also work for you.

Nobody has mentioned, you may want to look into an extra long paddle! 12" over height isn't terribly long. That's an 8' blade for you!

How long is the XL KeNalu?
