Paddling the new NSP.
« on: March 14, 2012, 06:42:47 PM »
Last week while I had the new NSP 14 in the Coco Matt construction for our big 14' board test I paddled it around St Kilda marina.. While paddle I did the usual by plucking some of the 'bad' starfish out and putting  them in the sun to die.. These starfish came here in the ballast water in ships from Japan and they seem to love the conditions here.. Each one can produce 20 million more.. and with no preditor their numbers are growing fast. They eat what the local starfish eat and so the beautiful local starfish numbers are dropping.. They eat fish eggs so the fish numbers also drop.. There is a $500 fine for putting them back in the water once removed.. Some days I only find a few.. other days I might pull out 20 or more.. We normally throw them up on the rocks.

While looking for them I came across a little fairy penguin that seemed distressed and caught in the seagrass.. It also seemed to be coated in oil or something.. Maybe it was trying to clean itself.. We normally leave these little fella's alone and never attemp to touch them but I plucked this one out so it could be checked out and cleaned.

The coco matt NSP Was great.. Here's my vid.

Nice vid. Would you how much the NSP weighs or your best guesstimate?

Keep an eye out for the Aussie 14' board test results due shortly - weight will be listed there.
In theory, there should be no difference between theory and practice, but in practice, there is...

14.6 kg is about 32 lbs for those without a converter.

It felt prety light and stiff to me for a 14' board.

DJ,
what do you think? Is this board is suitable for some soft downwinds or choppy waters?

I'm thinking it might even work in some serious down-winders.. For sure it would work in ligh conditions and choppy waters.. It looks like it would be a good all round flat water race/touring/down-wind board.

I think in our big 14 x 14' board test it came in about 2nd fastest.. Just behind the 25" wide carbon Starboard Ace that would probably cost about a grand more.

That's a big surprise for most considering it's.. ' just an NSP' ..  ;D

Thx for the info DJ.
This board can be the one I am looking for. I will check the retail price here in Spain.

DJ, one more question. Is there a significant weight difference between this coco mat version and the regular one use tested some time ago? Any other differences between the two?

I've heard that they're the same shape but the coco mat constuction is way lighter and still very stiff.

I'll find out exactly how much weight difference there is between the two.. I'm guessing 3-4 kg (8lbs)

Thx for checking it out DJ. This board can be the right choice for the Mediterranean sea conditions we have around Mallorca. I was considering the SB Coast Runner too but it is more down wind oriented and we rarely have down wind conditions here.

DJ ... we have an aggressive starfish here in Hawaii called the Crown of Thorns.  It's decimating our reefs (eats coral) and arrived here the same way you described  the ones that have invaded your offshore area.

Even here in Sweden I can buy an NSP! Hope they'll sell the 14' too.
