The beach is about an hour drive for me and here in Florida, the winds are so variable, that it can be clean when I leave the house and chop city by the time I get to the beach.

I've been frustrated by the conditions on quite a few occassions, so I usually just leave the beast at home.

I am looking for a locking SUP surfboard rack so that I can switch back and forth and not have to leave the board unsecured.

Thanks for your help!

I have the locking strap. You can see it at http://www.steelcore.net/ and never had a problem yet. I leave 3 boards on the roof for hours at malls, stores, beach, etc.

I use the SPT staps that DJ posted. I like them better than the steelcore straps because they have two steel lines vice one and it was 5 bucks cheaper.

I use the steelcores too but just bought them. My board is always on my truck.

Where are you located in FL?  What beach are you usually at?

A $7.25 solution.
Go to a windsurf shop and get one of the nuts ($2.00) that they use to secure a mast base in the standard mast base box. Put this in your standard fin box. Then go to the hardware store and get an eye-bolt ($.25) that fits the nut. Now when the board is on your racks, screw the eye-bolt into the nut and lock it with a bicycle chain & lock ($5.00).

I really should market this as a kit.

Little gang bangers stole my 10' custom psh 2 weeks ago.
They sold to another wannabe gangsta for 50$.
The BOne head took it to the beach and a friend called with the License plate#.
The board was recovered by five 0.
I got lucky.
Ordered steal core straps, won't leave home w/out them.
Landlocked four years😬

Hi Yannick (french name?),

As a windsurfer for 20 years, I have been investigating the roof rack problem. Locking straps seem to be the cheapest and simpliest way, but...
There is another way to lock a board on a roof:

THE HEAVY DUTY ROOF RACK!

this system has to be well finished, but I am sure a good craftsman can do something about.

the other system already exists in the united states: it's called "gatekeeper".
have a look at there web: http://www.dabco-products.com/index.php?p=catalog&parent=38&pg=1

I use the steel core and have not had a problem, But I suggest the longest at 12ft (I think) I have the 9ft as well but thats primarily for regular surfboards, I can lock 2 SUPs with the 12ft.... Definatly worth the money...

I once saw a simple system where you had two small bended plates when put together in the finbox couldn't be taken out of the finbox and then you just put the padlock through the hole in the plates - to take them out out just separated them again and took them out one at a time - did that make sense ?
These plate shoul be quite simple to make

The idea with the eyebolt is great - just make sure the that the wire is so short that you (or the little #%¤&#&) can't unscrew the eyebolt......

I've seen quite a few guys down under using that finbox lock... http://www.waveequation.com/surfboard_lock.html

It works great.

Sorry about the huge pics.. ???

That  system that DavidJohn is showing is fine if you have a small base fin.  If you have a larger fin then you have to take the fin out each time to use it. :-\
